USMNT to play road game in Ireland on June 2

The United States Men’s National Team will play the Republic of Ireland on June 2.

Ireland’s FA announced the match that will take place at Aviva Stadium in Dublin on Friday that will serve as a tune-up for the UEFA Nations League for the hosts.

The USMNT last faced the Republic of Ireland in 2014, when they fell 4-1 with a lineup that included Kyle Beckerman, Mix Diskerud and Chris Wondolowski.

Both teams are playing friendly-heavy schedules in 2018 after failing to qualify for the World Cup in Russia.

  1. Whoever is in charge of the USMNT then will have the daunting task of trying to find a back line (and perhaps one defensive mid) of talented players who can:
    1) Stay healthy
    2) Focus for 90+ minutes without the lapses so prevalent in the past 2 years
    3) Possess the athleticism to deal with big, fast and quick forwards
    4) Possess the soccer brains and use them to stay organized against tricky attackers
    5) Be young enough that it is reasonable they will be around in 2022
    6) Be good enough right out of the blocks that the temptation to mix things up is gone
Lastly, work in potential substitutes in case 1) does not work out.

After that work out the midfield and attacking lines, but those are easier and can likely be more subject to change than a solid defense line even though the mid and attacking players are what most fans pay attention to.

Without a back line that cannot prevent the likes of T&T, Panama, Jamaica, Honduras, and Guatemala from scoring goals, the US will continue to lose and tie games against the minnows, who pack the defense and make scoring even one goal through 10 or 11 defenders difficult.
