Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Julian Green, Landon Donovan, and more

Julian Green had found it tough to find the back of the net this season, scoring only once for Greuther Furth in the 2. Bundesliga ahead of Saturday’s league fixture. The 22-year-old broke his goalless drought on Saturday, scoring the first of his side’s two goals in a 2-1 home win against Kaiserslautern.

Green tapped home after 17 minutes to open the scoring, taking his total to two goals on the season. His side would hang on for the victory, giving them three in a row as Greuther Furth is now 14th in the league standings and sitting on a five-match unbeaten run.

In Mexico, Landon Donovan earned a late substitute appearance as Club Leon fell to Club America in Liga MX play.

Weston McKennie returned to the Schalke starting XI on Friday, helping his side to a 1-0 road win at Mainz. Christian Pulisic played a big part as he and Timmy Chandler both were in their sides respective starting line-ups as Borussia Dortmund hosted Eintracht Frankfurt. Terrence Boyd started for Darmstadt as his team welcomed Ingolstadt to town in league action.

    • Yes. Pretty much like the other cameos. He had one decent ball fall to him in the box… was unable to control but managed to turn it into a decent layoff for a teammate. All in all he doesn’t look off-the-pace, but he isn’t turning heads either.

  1. A couple of interesting tidbits in the summary. Tim Weah got first team minutes again? That’s pretty cool. Did this Parks kid get 1st team minutes? The last thing I read about him (several weeks ago was that he would be in the Reserve squad). W. McKinnie also went 90. That’s three young potentially earning some first team minutes. That’s good.

    • This weekend was Weah’s league debut. His previous minutes were in a cup game, I think. Parks has been going back and forth between reserve team and first team, but hasn’t gotten a lot of minutes with the first team. Awesome to see McKinnie jump straight back into the starting 11 and go 90, for sure.

      • Goretzka was injured and came on as a sub for Schalke. McKinnie moved to a RB type role when he came on. It was weird. Hoping him starting wasn’t just due to the injury and we see him again next week.

  2. I have watch Julian Green played a number of times over the last month. He has looked very comfortable and tidy on the ball. This week I thought he was far and away the best player on the pitch. He could have easily had 2-3 assists if anyone could finish. He also hit a blistering shot with his right foot cutting in from the wing, where he had split two defenders to let it fly from the corner of the box. Was headed to top corner whenthe keeper made a very nice save. He appeared to be playing ore of a with drawn striker or CAM. He looks good there. Always makes the right pass. There is hope for future growth.

    • He didn’t play yesterday, I saw something that he may be injured. Monterrey is generally underperforming, though. They are in 8th place which I think is the last playoff spot.

    • He was never listed in the squad injury updates on the Hamburg Twitter feed, he was visible in several training ground photos from Mar. 6, still seems a mystery.

  3. Pulisic really had two assists. His cross created the own goal and had Russ not put it in the net Reus would have. He really should’ve had three. Schurrle didn’t finish another very good cross.
