Aron Johannsson’s equalizer helps Werder Bremen draw versus Gladbach

Aron Johannsson has found it tough finding the back of the net this Bundesliga season, but still has had some strong performances for Werder Bremen.

The 27-year-old’s offensive effort a week turned into an Hamburg own-goal in Bremen’s 1-0 win at home.

His impact a week ago carried over to this week as Johannsson netted his first league goal of the season in Friday in Bremen’s 2-2 league draw at Borussia Monchengladbach.

After coming on as a second-half sub at Borussia Park, Johannsson capped off Bremen’s comeback scoring after 78 minutes.

The forward finished off Jerome Gondorf’s assist into the top-right corner which pegged the visitors back from a 2-0 deficit. It was Johannsson’s second goal of the season in all competitions.

The 2-2 draw kept Bremen in 14th place, three points clear of the bottom three.

  1. Undoubtedly, Johanson made the switch to the USA because he thought he’d have a better chance with the US of playing in the WC finals. Now, with Iceland going to Russia this year and having done so well in Euro-2016, I wonder how he feels about his decision.

    • I’m sure if he was healthy, he’d have second thoughts. He is still young enough to keep him around for Qatar. Something tells me his style will mesh well with Kenny Saife.

  2. Aron Johannsson, absolutely sensational!!!!! Came in the game in the 46th minute and was immediately a menace, absolutely changing the climate for Werder Bremen… They looked like a whole different team with him on the pitch. Had two clean shots on goal but was kept out by the brilliance of Yann Sommer, but scored in the 78th minute (Johannsson did the same thing by coming off the bench to force a late winner against Hamburg also!!!!). Playing for a country like Iceland (that recognizes European talent/tactical awareness/ball control and actual skill) could have seriously elevated his career. Hope he stays healthy and continues on this streak!!!!

    • Raised in Iceland, but did the one time FIFA switch to represent US at the World Cup. Unfortunately got injured (after subbing on because of Altidore’s injury). Hasn’t featured for the MNT since 2015 I believe. Finally, returning to form after being injured for much of the last 3 and half years.

      • I believe he was injured heading in to the tournament and re-aggravated his back (or was it ankle?) injury in that sub appearance. Hate to beat a dead horse but it’s another reason LD belonged on that roster.
Back on topic…it’s great to see Aron playing well after so much trouble with injuries when his career trajectory was on the up. We desperately need anyone outside of Pulisic who can be a difference maker in the attack.

    • Except if you look at the Icelandic roster no one plays on a big team it’s low level EPL and some lower European league teams. Injuries and if you believe his current club manager his attitude hampered his development not the USMNT.

  3. He had two earlier shots on goal both were finger tip saves by the keeper. He could have easily had 2 or 3 goals this games if not for the opposing keeper.
