Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Theoson-Jordan Siebatcheu, Rubio Rubin, and more

Stade Reims have been pushing hard for promotion back into the French top flight, sitting atop the Ligue 2 table for some time now. Reims rolled their way to another three points this weekend, defeating Paris FC 3-0 away from home thanks to two goals from French-American forward Theoson-Jordan Siebatcheu. Siebatcheu’s first goal on Saturday came in the 12th minute, as he danced past his defender and slotted into the bottom-right corner. In the 48th minute, Siebatcheu got some help for his second goal of the match, as a lucky deflection went off the forward and in following his previous header. The visitors would later add a third goal for insurance, stamping the three points in their race for promotion. Siebatcheu now has 12 goals on the season in 28 appearances, which has Reims 11 points clear at the top of the table.

Mix Diskerud continued his strong start with Goteborg, scoring his second goal of the season. Despite the former MLS midfielder’s tally, his side fell 2-1 at Ostersunds on Sunday in Allsvenskan action. Romain goal registered an assist helping Sundsvall to a point against Malmo in Sweden, while Rubio Rubin notched a goal for Club Tijuana in Liga MX.

Elsewhere, Christian Pulisic played the full 90 minutes for Borussia Dortmund but it wasn’t enough as Schalke edged the visitors 2-0. Timmy Chandler came off the bench for Eintracht Frankfurt in their lopsided loss at Bayer Leverkusen. DeAndre Yedlin started once again for Newcastle and added an assist as they upset Arsenal at home, while Geoff Cameron and Stoke face West Ham on Monday.

  1. I know people will say ‘Been there, done that,’ but I think Diskerud deserves another NT look in the coming year. I guess it all depends on who the new coach is, the philosophy of play going forward, etc., but I think there is something left there.

    • I don’t disagree. Guy just needed some PT. The situation in NYC got weird when they brought in Lampard and Pirlo to collect pay checks and usurp MF playing time.

    • I disagree pretty strongly. I never rated him highly at all. I think he’s a clever player in the final third but has more holes than his good qualities can cover.
For me he was similar to Brek Shea in that he would occasionally turn up on the stat sheet, but the talent was never there to expect that to continue indefinitely.

      • I think he is a lot smarter than Brek Shea. I think his issue is that he can’t keep up on a fast tempo game.

    • The issue with Diskerud was/is where do you play him, and who do you bench in place of him? Diskerud is not a CDM, He’s not athletic enough for a Box-to-Box CM. That only leaves an ACM (#10) role as a possible fit.
Now if you see Mix as a possible ACM, than how do you rank him against others emerging at that position….Pulisic, Parks, Hyndman, Scott, Saief, etc….

I won’t say he doesn’t have a chance to represent the USMNT this cycle, but as a player who’s currently 27 and will be 31/32 come the next WC I see it as a long shot that he’ll be a contributor.

      • LIS. thats a more intelligent way of saying what i was trying to say. thanks. He lacks any versatility to play more than one position. He is not good enough to warrant handing the keys to the attack to him either.
I also don’t think he fits stylistically with the US team. Against proper competition we are almost always going to cede possession and play on the counter. That is not his game at all. On the road in concacaf we are forced to play in scrappy, physical affairs often in sub par conditions. Again, not Mixxs game. I really only see him fitting in home games vs lesser competition. That doesn’t really add any value to the squad at all.

  2. I’m all for TSJ playing for the usmnt but I want to know about his commitment, if he has had contact with with or heard from the US. All for expanding the player pool. Last I read he was willing to think about it or keeping his options open but that was 2 years ago

    • And a couple of weeks ago a commenter here was bashing Yedlin. He has started 90% of the time he’s been healthy and now an assist. What’s not to like? It’s not like we have dozens of defenders starting in top European leagues.
