Bobby Wood sent off as Hamburg is relegated from Bundesliga

Hamburg needed a lot to go their way to remain a Bundesliga club next season. A valiant effort fell short for the club as they are now guaranteed relegation to the German second tier for the first time in their history.

Hamburg defeated Borussia Monchengladbach 2-1 at Imtech Arena on Saturday, but was relegated due to Wolfsburg’s 4-1 win over already relegated Koln.

Hamburg’s Aaron Hunt opened the scoring in the 11th minute from the penalty spot. However, the visitors responded later in the half from a fast break.

Josip Drmic rifled Gladbach’s equalizer in the 28th minute, as the Swiss forward finished Thorgan Hazard’s assist.

Lewis Holtby regained the lead for Hamburg in the 63rd minute, but it proved to not be enough. American forward Bobby Wood was sent off in the 71st minute after picking up a second yellow card for a foul on Christoph Kramer.

It was Wood’s first sending off since Oct. 30th, 2016. Wood, who scored 12 goals across all competitions in two years at Hamburg, specifically found it tough this campaign in general.

Frustration boiled over with Hamburg fans throwing flares onto the field causing a delay during second-half stoppage time. The teams eventually were allowed back on the pitch to finish the final minutes of the match.

It is unknown whether or not Wood will remain with the club in the second tier next season.

Wolfsburg’s victory means they will face Holstein Kiel in a two-legged playoff beginning on Thursday. The winner of the playoff will be in the Bundesliga for the 2018-19 campaign.

  1. Again missed two easy chances that would’ve kept his team up. The red card at the worst possible moment was just the icing on the cake just like Altidore at Sunderland. If Huddersfield is looking for a striker that can’t score then Bobby is their man.

    • Because Bobby Wood is not being shoved down our throats like the “other striker”. Also, nobody on here is saying Bobby Wood is the best option we have up front or should START EVERY GAME. So, no need to attack Wood. Wait till someone says he is a guaranteed starter at striker for the USMNT and see what happens….

      • Nothing you just said has anything to do with Jozy being worse than wood. That’s my only point, if Jozy was “the worst player ever” and people use Sunderland as evidence, then how come people don’t lament bobby wood for having an even worse season? Just because Jozy was “shoved down our throats” doesn’t neglect the fact that wood had a worse season and is still supported while we crucified our national team player for having not as bad of a season as wood.

      • DLOA its has everything to do with Jozy “shoved down our throats”. No one hates Altidore. Most people on here dislike him based on his rock solid placement on the national team. Everyone knew he had a hard time at Sunderland and would have like him to move to another club and try to jump start his career (as his success is our success) but think about it, if you are mediocre and labelled as the best, you will be torn apart to highlight that mediocrity. You don’t show your discontent for something until it’s put in your face (or like I said “shoved down our throats”). That’s why I said wait and see that happens to Bobby Wood if he is deemed a guaranteed spot at striker for the USMNT.

      • Yeah, bizzy, that doesn’t make much sense. You just admitted that how players are portrayed by the media colors how you rate them as players. No wonder you rate Morales ahead of Bradley….

  2. Just like jozy in a bad situation with a bad club but I hope he sticks it out and stays in Europe if he is wanted. I think he is better than jozy and offers more but time will tell.

  3. Normally I am all for US players playing in Europe if they have the chance. However, I think Bobby Wood is at the point where he is probably better off coming to MLS. I don’t think Bundesliga 2 helps him and I don’t think he is good enough right now that he would be playing much if at all in Bundesliga 1. I think MLS is reaching the level equal to Liga MX so that Wood could make good money, play at a higher level than a second division in Europe, and play regularly instead of sitting on the bench in a first division European team.

  4. Not as dramatic an ending as Zidane. He is hardly to blame for Hamburg’s terrible defending and nothing being created in the midfield.

He will hopefully find a B1 club but probably as a rotation player to start.
