D.C. United’s attacking weakness is plain to see, but it appears the club is eyeing a big-name fix this summer.
According to Goal, Carlos Tevez and Fernando Torres have joined Mario Balotelli as potential signings for D.C., who will be looking to make a big splash with a move to the brand-new Audi Field looming. According to the report, Torres’ status as a free agent makes him particularly intriguing as he would require no transfer fee once his contract ends in June.
Tevez rejoined Boca Juniors back in January following a frustrating stint in China. The former Manchester City striker is now 34-years-old but has scored three times in five matches since returning to Argentina.
Torres, also 34, has made 24 league appearances for Atletico Madrid, with all but five of those appearances coming as a substitute. The Spanish striker has scored three goals this season after scoring eight and 11 in his past two seasons.
D.C. United’s attack has struggled a bit this season, scoring just eight goals in seven matches. Last season, Luciano Acosta and Patrick Mullins led the team in goals with just five apiece.
If I was DCU I would pass on both and focus on somebody like Chicharito – somebody under 30 who definitely can still find the back of the net, and somebody who’s going to draw in a bunch of fans. I think he’d be VASTLY more successful than Torres or Tevez, and you’d likely have him the next 5 years if he worked out.
Torres and Tevez are names but I think they missed their window as far as MLS goes. Retirees looking for a tour and exit simply don’t do well here anymore.
can’t see any of these being a good move–these are mls 1.0 signings: big names for the sake of having big names. rather that money be spread out through the squad; it’s not like striker is dcu’s only weak spot.
Pass on both, unless they come at below $1 million a year, which neither would likely accept.
DCU being a real team again is going to be fun
This isn’t the answer. Both would be bad looks for MLS if they shell out a lot of money for two guys who are very much past their prime. Tevez’s work ethic and attitude is not what DC United/MLS needs, and Torres just doesn’t seem to have that goal scoring ability anymore.
Either move will not bode well for MLS reputation for being a retirement league
just sing all three
I can see Torres adabting like Villa has but he will still need some supporting players. He played in the more physical Premier League and thrived with Liverpool. But there were also those Chelsea seasons. Tevez would probably get emotionally distraught and want to go home. He’s too up and down mentally.
