New York City FC wasted little time naming the replacement for recently-departed head coach Patrick Vieira, as Manchester City assistant coach Domenec Torrent was announced as head coach on Monday.
Torrent has been Pep Guardiola’s top assistant at Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester City, and he has previous head coaching experience from Girona in Spain.
“Though I have enjoyed a wonderful 11 years working alongside my colleague and close friend Pep Guardiola – it has always been my ambition to manage a team again and I really couldn’t have hoped for a better opportunity than at this football club,” Torrent said.
“Domènec has been part of building some of the most memorable teams in soccer. He also comes from clubs that have a philosophy of giving an opportunity to younger talent, so this will continue to give opportunities to our younger players and is exciting for our Academy,” NYCFC sporting director Claudio Reyna said.
NYCFC is second in the Eastern Conference with 28 points after Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Atlanta United.
Torrent’s first match in charge will be June 24 at Yankee Stadium against defending MLS champion Toronto FC.
Again, I’m going to repeat this until I’m blue in the face: big-money, big-ambition teams like NYCFC do not need to be limited in their ability to spend. We need more Torrents coaching here.
I am not a fan of “superteams” but I also do not like limiting those who intend to invest. I’m going to re-iterate that teams like NYCFC that would bring in more big-name guys should be allowed to…basically, they should be allowed to buy unused DP slots for cold hard cash, which the selling club could then apply to their own salary cups.
Yes, it would mean the LA clubs, NYCFC, Seattle, Atlanta, Toronto, etc could easily have wage bills exceeding $50+ million a year…but even with a half-dozen DP slots, they’d still have to find enough cap space to sign decent supporting players, while the clubs selling their DP slots would likely get $5 million (or more) per slot for selling them, which in turn means they themselves could go out and sign guys who might not be superstars, but they could also sign a LOT MORE of them, and probably field deeper rosters.
sounds like a serious upgrade at the coaching position, no disrespect intended against vieira. wow!
