Stuttgart sporting director: Julian Green likely to go back to Greuther Furth

After spending the 2017-18 season on loan with Greuther Furth, it appears Julian Green is set to return to the 2. Bundesliga club when the new season begins.

Stuttgart sporting director Michael Reschke says that the club is in discussions with Greuther Furth regarding Green’s future. Green, who is currently with the U.S. Men’s National Team, made 24 league appearances and scored three goals in the 2. Bundesliga last season.

“I still have a lot of conversations,” Reschke said. “For example, we are in a promising discussion with Greuther Furth regarding the future of Julian Green. I assume that we will find a very good solution for everyone involved and that Julian will stay in Furth.”

It remains unclear whether Green would rejoin Furth on a loan or permanent deal after a loan stint with the club last season. Green joined originally Stuttgart from Bayern Munich in January 2017, but made just 10 appearances for the club.

Green and the U.S. Men’s National Team are set to face France on Saturday in the final friendly of the summer.

  1. It still bothers me that this dude got on the world cup team over Donovan in Brasil. I can’t imagine Klinsmann snubbing him for anything other than he didn’t like him, personally.

    • It’s a good league if you want to put up numbers offensively. Jozy and AJ had killer seasons at AZ and I think Bradley even scored 14-15 goals when he played for Heerenvereen. Miazga had a good season there and Novakovich had something like 21 goals in the Dutch 2nd Div.

IMO playing in a first division, whether it’s in Ligue 1, the Eredivisie, or a lesser league like in Belgium, Sweden, etc. is probably better than doing the same in the B2. The only way he can justify playing in the B2 is if he has a Bobby Wood at Union Berlin like season with 20 or more goals.

  2. FYI, this is the same exec who was TD at Bayern while Green was there. This guy has never rated Green and seems to have it out for him. Might be best for Julian to look around to see if he can move somewhere else provided he’s got a shot at getting first team minutes of course.

I’m still a believer in Green and think he’s one of the best attacking talents in the pool and just needs a coach/td to believe in him somewhere. I think he’s shown promise in the false 9/attacking mid role he’s been playing for Fuerth the second half of the season and maybe that’s his best spot which has always been a question for him as to where he fits, striker/winger/mid.

    • The guy barely got on the stat sheet in B2. Why would a B1 club with any aspirations rate him? I don’t think anyone ‘has it out for him’. He simply needs to improve as a player

  3. Main thing is, he’s gotta play and establish himself. The B2 seems a good level for him at the moment.

Guy has the technical ability and physical talent but he needs some lead in his butt and a little more bite and toughness to take that next step. Dude definitely has the potential to play and probably even feature in the B1 but we might be talking more when he’s 25 than now.
