This Weekend’s Soccer on TV

With less than a week to go until the World Cup begins, national teams across the globe are preparing for the big party with their final tune-up friendlies before arriving in Russia.

Brazil, Germany, Mexico, France, and all the favorites are in action this weekend as they make sure their squads are 100% armed and ready for the biggest stage in global sports next week.

Mexico finishes its World Cup prep on Saturday when they take on fellow competitors Denmark. El Tri claim to be perfectly focussed for this edition of the tournament, in which they will face the defending world champions in Germany during the group stage.

There is also one last full slate of MLS and USL matches on the docket before they take time off for the beginning stages of the World Cup.

  1. So, is there no ‘soccer on TV’ for the World Cup?
    (Evidently not.)
    .
Is it really over a week since anyone even bothered to post in this category?
    (Evidently so.)
    .
We could have discussed the pros and cons of the broadcasting efforts of Fox (schlock) and Telemundo (low-tech).
    .
Like, how deeply embarrassing it is to see Fernando Fiore having to clown and banter with some spurious ‘DJ’ (why does soccer need a DJ?!) when he would obviously rather be talking about soccer. Or how deeply awful it was to bring in Zlatan Ibrahimovic when he, unsurprisingly, had nothing to say except about himself. Or who the heck is Kelly Smith, and why can’t she even read names off a teleprompter? Or why is Alexi Lalas so unremittingly loud? And why do we have to put up with Rob Stone, who apparently can’t pronounce any language except sarcasm, when we could have had Kate Abdo, the only real professional of the lot, who is apparently being forced to take the graveyard shift and look happy about it?
    .
And why are the whole Fox group still ha-ha-ing about their supposed studio ‘in Red Square’ when everyone knows that their network was too stingy to actually send them there, and they’re really in some warehouse in LA with a big screen behind them? Was that shot of Rob Stone, with his flowered tie hanging down so low it looked like his zipper was broken, also just faked?
    .
Or why Telemundo isn’t even HD (4:3 ratio, really?!) and why it apparently can’t even afford a large screen in the studio that doesn’t show reflections of the people standing in front of it. Univisión has done this much, much better — Telemundo looks very cheesy by comparison. Even compared to its Premier League coverage, which could at least afford a spacious studio with white chairs.
    .
But apparently no one is interested.
    .
    What else is new.

  2. Thank you for that, 2-Stepper.

There are always so many articles and photos on this site, and so many often acerbic comments from the regulars, about every little last detail of US soccer and the USMNT. I enjoy reading those articles too (well, moderately), but at the same time, I also enjoy following international soccer, and would enjoy discussing it if anyone else ever wanted to.

It’s not a zero-sum game — space on the website is not finite, and covering other countries (who, after all, did manage to qualify for the tournament) doesn’t mean covering the US less.

I was very pleased that the US performed so (relatively) creditably against France. Julian Green — heldenhaft!

But during the tournament, I will be rooting for, and enjoying watching, Mexico, Costa Rica, Gerrmany, England, Brazil, Colombia, and maybe even Iceland and Panama. And for Mo Salah, if not so much Egypt under al-Sisi.

So thank you, Ives & Co. (Larry? whoever handles international, mostly unsung but nevertheless appreciated), in advance, for covering all of them too.

  3. How odd that SBI would use a picture featuring an El Tri player when the USMNT is playing this weekend… Isnt the tag line of this site “the world of soccer with an American voice”?

    • Nothing odd about it. If you look at the site there’s tons of USMNT coverage. Soccer on TV is a piece that lets readers know WHAT ELSE is being shown this weekend BESIDES the obvious big games related to American soccer. This isn’t a new thing.

      • Considering the vast array of games being played this weekend, why feature the USMNT’s rival? I guess Lil’ Bobby will be happy,..

      • Last time I checked Mexico was in America…as well a great number of other countries. No foul, Play on
