World Cup Matchday 11: Live Commentary

The World Cup group stage rolls on on Sunday as one heavyweight looks to seal a knockout round spot while one of the most open groupings battle for their own advantages in their second game.

Action starts with England, who takes on Panama following an opening win over Tunisia. With three points already in hand, the Three Lions can seal a knockout round spot with a victory, but a resolute Panama team will stand in their way in search of the country’s first World Cup point.

The day then turns to Group H with Senegal battling Japan for supremacy atop the group. Both sides turned in wins that were considered upsets in their first matches, and a spot in the knockout round is in the cards if either team can win on Sunday.

Finally, Colombia and Poland will look to bounce back from their tournament-opening defeats and salvage hope of their own advancement as they close out the day.

The SBI Editorial Staff will be on hand all day long providing live commentary of the matches. Feel free to jump in the conversation and share your thoughts in the comments below.

Enjoy the action.

    • There’s a case to be made that the talent in this game isn’t all that far from that. Plenty of players from middling leagues (yes, I am including non-PGS Ligue 1) around the world.

  1. Second game is underway as Senegal takes on Japan. Lively start for Senegal, who have earned a few early corners.

    • GOAL SENEGAL! A number of crosses finally pay off in a goal. Shot is saved by the goalkeeper and off Mane and in. 1-0 Senegal.

      • GOAL JAPAN! Inui with the finish as he wiggles his way through defenders before curling a shot to the far post. Great finish and it’s 1-1.

      • HALFTIME: Pretty fun half. Both sides with solid moments. Certainly a game that can go either way. Senegal needs to get Mane going a bit more.

  2. Absolute beatdown from England. Very impressive. Ligard, Trippier impressed me a lot in that one, even if it was against Panama. Can only beat who is in front of you. Still, good for Panama with that goal. Interested to see how England-Belgium goes.

  3. In addition, I’m so glad to see Panama was punished with two penalties in the first half on grabbing and pushing inside the box. During world cup qualifications, the CONCACAF referees were so bad that they allowed or ignored these kind of rough play and unsportsmanlike conducts on the pitch. Welcome to the World Cup CONCACAF bullies! FIFA should send all CONCACAF referees to the HQ in Europe for re-training and re-certification processes.

    • oh absolutely! when england was awarded the first pk i was SHOCKED. i mean as you said in concacaf it would just be play on. good on the ref for giving the pk. and when england got the second pk, i thought i was dreaming. totally agree, send concacaf refs to europe, try anything that might help.

    • Also, it shows the rest of the world what the good teams in CONCACAF have to put up with. Whenever I watch European qualifying game or Euro Cup games , while they are intense, they aren’t dirty like in CONCACAF.

  4. this right here is your argument against a 48 team wc field. unless you’re going to also bring out the strong man, the midget and the three eyed freak.

    • When it got to 4-0 in the first half I couldn’t watch anymore and used th time to start watching a game I had on my DVR that was too early here on the West Coast.

  5. Down 0-6 a Panama’s 36 or 38-year old striker, Perez is still playing at 82nd minutes. Is Panama looking to compete in the future anymore? They really don’t have a younger striker in the pipeline to develop? It’s pathetic!

    • Blas Perez is 58 – part of the Red Fouling Plague’s Golden Generation. Their sub and scorer Boloy is 37 too

  6. my friend clapped when panama scored. i said, “you cheer for the red team?” she said, “yes.” i said, “why?” she said, “because it takes them so long to score, so i think it’s really hard for them.” lol

  7. How about that! England took their foot of the pedal but good for the Fouling Plague of Panama – or whatever their nickname is

  8. my friend is watching her first world cup match and she just said “doesn’t the red team know the rules? they keep breaking them!” lol

  9. Conmebol strikes again…by far the weakest, least competitive conference in the world…Panama are embarassing…and USMNT couldn’t qualify out of this garbage conference…but “quit whining about soccer in the US”…too many delusional folks in this country, unfortunately…

    • Slow your roll Ivan. Africa and Asia haven’t been lighting it up with 5 teams each. Not that Panama was ever going t be competitive, but the draw was terrible for CONCACAF with Costa Rica being drawn in a group with Brazil and Mex with Germany.

    • And CONMEBOL is South America. With 5 teams too. Other than Brazil – do any of their teams have points – like Messi and Argentina?

    • Other than South Korea’s late goal against Mexico – they were a hack-fest yesterday. Pretty disappointing in my book

  10. Ugh -CONCACAF. Teams like England and Germany are athletic enough to deal with physical play, can be direct to score and have no mercy. This could really really get out of control

    • Already out of control. With smaller nations, you generally pick one: technical ability or physical prowess. When you play the Englands or Belgiums or Germanys of the world, teams are technically gifted AND world-class athletes like any you’d see in any American sport. Can’t be one or the other, need both.

      • You are right. I was typing at 3-0! England ran over a pretty good US team in a friendly at Chicago’s Soldier Field a few years ago. Once they get their tails up goals just keep going in.

  11. GOAL ENGLAND! England earns a corner in the seventh minute and, after a bunch of pushing and shoving, Trippier whips the ball in. Stones on the end of it for an open header and it’s 1-0. Panama in deep trouble already.

    • Panama playing a bit better since the goal. Several decent chances only for England to make a last-ditch stop. England still comfortable, but Panama looking somewhat dangerous.

      • PENALTY TO ENGLAND! Lingard hacked down in the box as Torres comes flying in. Sterling offside on the play, but not deemed to be involved.

      • GOAL ENGLAND! Kane buries the spot kick in the 22nd minute. This one is probably done and dusted.

      • ANOTHER ONE FOR ENGLAND! Spectacular finish from Lingard following a great sequence of build-up play. Lingard’s shot from outside the box hits the crossbar and in, giving England a 3-0 lead.

      • MAKE IT FOUR! Stones again, finishing off after Penedo stuffs Kane on the line. Running up the score now. Still need two more to leap over Belgium on goal differential.

      • PENALTY TO ENGLAND! Godoy yanks down Kane and the Tottenham star will get another chance from the spot.

      • GOAL KANE! That’s five. Another penalty kick for the Tottenham star. Just a matter of how many at this point.

      • GOAL ENGLAND! That’s six for the Three Lions. Shot from Loftus-Cheek banks off Kane and in. Kane will claim it for his hat-trick, which has to be one of the most ridiculous hat-tricks I’ve seen.
