Bayern chief Rummenigge: Alphonso Davies will join club in new year

The deal isn’t yet completely official, but Alphonso Davies’ move to Bayern Munich is all but done.

Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge says that the club has agreed to a deal with the Vancouver Whitecaps for the 17-year-old star. Reports on Tuesday said the deal will be an MLS-record fee, although the Canadian will be ineligible to move to the club before his 18th birthday.

“He’s already signed but has to pass his medical,” Rummenigge said, according to Goal. “He will come to Europe on January 1 when he is 18 and play for Bayern Munich.”

Bayern manager Niko Kovac says that, if the Whitecaps miss the playoffs, Davies could join the club early to train before being officially registered in January.

“Everything has to work out first. The ink is not dry yet,” Kovac said on Tuesday. “We don’t know exactly what’s going to happen. I don’t know exactly what will happen, but he’s a young player, and young players, when they are as good as him, are very expensive because a lot of clubs are interested in him and I’m sure because a lot of clubs are interested in him the price might go up.

“He’s very fast, he’s very talented, he’s very good,” Kovac added. “I believe he has a very big future if he gets the right training.”

Davies, who won the Golden Boot at the 2017 Gold Cup at just 16 years old, has reportedly drawn interest from Real Madrid, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund in addition to the German champions.

The Whitecaps star has played 20 times for the club this season, scoring three goals while providing seven assists.

  1. So he finishes the season with the Whitecaps. Why did he sit out the Sounders game ?
So the Whitecaps didn’t lose $19 million at the last moment?

I have nothing better to root for this year ( Sounders fan ), so I guess I am rooting for Vancouver to miss the playoffs by the 3 points they lost when he didn’t play last Sat. leaving Vancouver with no one in attack but KK.

  2. Based on the breakout season this year he’ll probably be at least a solid MLS pro-level guy. Not in MLS anymore but that’s all he’s shown yet. We’ll see if he elevates his game from here.

    • I wouldn’t call 3 goals and 7 assists a breakout season, Manneh had 6 goals when he was 18 with the Caps and he can’t get on the field in Liga Mx (apparently now in Switzerland). Davies seems more like a Joel Campbell to me than a Pulisic, athletic some skill but unlikely to make a difference for the big name club. I hope he does well because it will ease the way for more young MLS players, but I’m not holding my breath.

Sounds pretty familiar except that this one happened.
Truth be told the way Real Madrid is stockpiling young talent I’m surprised they didn’t make a solid offer for him.
