USWNT Woman of the Match: Alex Morgan

Alex Morgan opened the 2018 Tournament of Nations with a hat trick in the U.S. Women’s National Team’s 4-2 win over Japan.

The three-goal effort by the experienced forward earned her SBI’s USWNT Woman of the Match.

Morgan opened the scoring in the 18th minute and scored again in the 26th and 56th minutes to open the gap between the USWNT and the team it beat in the 2015 Women’s World Cup final.

Megan Rapinoe, who scored the fourth USWNT goal, and Julie Ertz also turned in solid performances for Jill Ellis’ side in the tournament that serves as a tune-up for 2019 World Cup qualifying.

  1. Probably me. She was out of form then dealing with injuries and such. Clearly back in form now. It also helps having Pinoe and now Heath back playing as well. Back then Morgan was forced into a more creative role that she is not suited for.

  2. I remember about 9 months or so ago I sad after a WMNT game that I thought Alex Morgan looked good. Somebody responded saying she was garbage or something to that effect and she shouldn’t even be playing. The next game she was player of the game and has been on a tear ever since. One of the announcers said she has scored 16 goals in the last 16 games. All in all, the team looked good, despite the color announcer seeming to look for things to criticize. When they were up 2-1, she made it sound like they were down 2-1. I was switching back and forth, but from what I saw, I thought the passing in this women’s game was better than in the NYFC vs. Orlando game.
