Americans Abroad Weekend Preview: DeAndre Yedlin, Matt Miazga, and more

U.S. Men’s National Team defender DeAndre Yedlin had a strong Premier League campaign with Newcastle United a season ago, and the 25-year-old has his sights set on a strong start to the 2018-19 campaign this weekend.

England’s top-flight kicks off this weekend with Newcastle welcoming Tottenham to St. James Park in Saturday’s opener. Yedlin made 34 appearances for Rafa Benitez’s bunch a season ago and the right back will seek to increase that number even more this season.

Elsewhere, Matt Miazga will seek his Nantes debut as Ligue 1 play gets underway this weekend. Tim Weah will look to follow up a strong performance in last weekend’s French Super Cup triumph as PSG kicks off league action as well.

Andrija Novakovich will get his first taste of the Dutch Eredivisie as Fortuna Sittard travels to Excelsior. Eric Lichaj and Hull City travel to Sheffield Wednesday in the EFL Championship, while Antonee Robinson and Wigan face a tough test at Aston Villa.

  1. Another season… and once again I am reminded of how utterly unwatchable Newcastle are. Unremarkable players everywhere. And of course Ayoze Perez… the “even poorer man’s Nani”. Steaming garbage. Somehow they’ll finish 15th and the season will be considered a success.

  2. Richards did not play for Bayern II today, so that probably indicates he will dress on Sunday for the Super Cup.

Sargent trained with the first team all week in a different city, so I’m not sure if he will play for WB II on Sunday.

    • Well I was wrong on just about everything Amon returned from injury for a few minutes, Richards did not dress for Bayern, and Sargent played for WBII in a loss.

  3. Jonathan Amon not in the squad for today’s Europa League qualifier, I believe he is still injured.

Chris Richards and Bayern Munich face Tim Chandler and Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday in the German Super Cup as well. ( I don’t expect Richards to play but he might make the roster)
