Bill Hamid rejoins D.C. United on loan from Denmark

Bill Hamid is set for a return to the D.C. United after just seventh months away from the nation’s capital.

The 27-year-old goalkeeper joined FC Midtjylland in January, but the Danish club agreed to send Hamid back to D.C. United on a one-and-a-half-year loan, the MLS side announced Wednesday.

Originally from just outside of D.C., Hamid made history in 2009 when he became United’s first ever homegrown player to sign with the senior team.

Hamid is coming off of a largely unsuccessful venture in Denmark, where he struggled to just three first team appearances for FC Midtjylland.

Despite his recent struggles, D.C. United is grateful to have him back.

He’s a major part of the fabric of this club with his local ties, Homegrown history and on-field accomplishments so bringing him back on loan is a great acquisition as we make a push for playoffs at Audi Field,” said General Manager and Vice President of Soccer Operations Dave Kasper  “He’s a leader on and off the field and we’re excited to welcome him back to the club he worked tirelessly for over eight seasons.”

D.C. United were reportedly interested in a permanent transfer for their former goalkeeper, but they were could not come to an agreement with Midtjylland.

  1. Good for Hamid. He gets some playing time on a team that will allow tons of shots to come through, and he still will have his options available to him in Europe whenever he decides to go back.

  2. in other words they wanted him back this season but they couldn’t work out all the terms and the window deadline was today, so call it a loan and they’ll sort out the details going forward.

the sheer amount of these hamid/villafana boomerangs should give some pause to those who want to act like going abroad solves everything. some players prosper and find a home. some struggle and come back.

      • Actually fairly straightforward. FCM brought in 2 keepers summer 2017 including the starter. They then for whatever reason also brought in Hamid but at the winter window. But they were cruising enough they took second in league starting the other guy. I think he was signed to be the backup. I don’t know if he knew that.

Fit matters. You look at something like Hyndman’s loan to Hibernian and some people are like, why. Well last time he was in the SPL he got PT, and the team he is joining just transferred out McGinn at his position. Versus say Miazga goes and signs for Chelsea where they are a top 5 team, have tons of people at his spot, and transfer in so many players each year they can’t figure out what to do with them all, and end up loaning many.

Coming back to DC makes complete sense because they respect him like a starter and he slides back into the team. Whatever funk he went into from one game in a season, that was hurting his USMNT chances, he can turn it around.
