Josh Sargent scores for Werder Bremen II in first competitive professional match

With the start of the Bundesliga season looming, Josh Sargent made quite an impression by scoring with Werder Bremen II in his first competitive professional match.

Playing with the team’s reserves, Sargent scored the game-tying goal as Werder Bremen II tied Eintracht Norderstedt on Tuesday. Sargent’s goal came in the 79th minute, as the forward ran onto a cross and finished first-time from close range.

Sargent scored his first U.S. Men’s National Team goal against Bolivia back in May as the young forward was a highlight of the team’s three-game international slate. The 18-year-old forward joined Werder Bremen this past winter and is expected to push for a spot with the first team.

Here’s a look at Sargent’s goal:

    • Played 90 minutes, fellow American Isaiah Young was red carded in the 50th minute. Even Bremen didn’t have a recap on their website.

    • I’m sure its just to let him get more mins in a competitive match other than a friendly. And first team may not be a guarantee early on

      • You are correct but there was reports that he was going to remain with first team. Then the Pizarro move came in and now our boy is down to team 2.

      • Don’t panic. He has yet to play a competitive game at the senior level. Anywhere. The good news is Germany has been far and away the most receptive place for our teenagers to quickly ascend to meaningful first team time. Sargent is in a great situation…. he controls his destiny.

      • A lot of times the better the U23s will practice and dress with the first team and then play matches with the U23s if they aren’t going to get minutes in the first team match. Sargent has largely played with Bremen’s 2nd string all Summer, he last played for Bremen on 29th in a friendly and was named the best player by the club’s website against a largely first team Groningen side. Bremen had another friendly the 30th in which most of the first team starters played against VVVenlo. Bremen II has two more league matches before Bremen I plays in the German Cup on August 18. Bremen play Worms in that Cup match, Worms is a 4th division squad, like Bremen II, so we may see Sargent make his debut in the matchday squad then.
