Americans Abroad Weekend Preview: Miazga, Yedlin, and more

Matt Miazga was at the center of attention on Tuesday with the U.S. Men’s National Team, and now the centerback returns to Ligue 1 play this weekend.

Miazga and Nantes snatched their first win of their domestic campaign on Sept. 1st, holding on for a 3-2 win at Strasbourg. The 23-year-old has fit in nicely in France, starting in three of the club’s four league matches this season. Nantes will be favored to get points this weekend as they face Stade Reims, who has lost their last two league fixtures.

Elsewhere, DeAndre Yedlin will look to give Newcastle another strong outing as they battle Arsenal in EPL action. Danny Williams will hope for a start with Huddersfield Town as they host Crystal Palace, while Tim Ream seeks his season debut for Fulham.

In Germany, Bobby Wood and Hannover entertain RB Leipzig at home, while Alfredo Morales and Fortuna Dusseldorf face Hoffenheim. Andrija Novakovich returns to club duty with Fortuna Sittard in the Netherlands, while Romain Gall and Malmo battle Ostersunds in Sweden.

  1. Shaw Moore’s transfer paperwork apparently finally clear as he gets his first minutes for his new club, 22 minutes off the bench.

    • Pulisic and Chandler were both on the injured list and did not dress, but SBI was evidently unaware, again.
      .
John Brooks (not Jonathan, by the way, TV commentators please take note) will probably start for Wolfsburg, but Jonathan Klinsmann is so far from being a starter even for Hertha II that it seems gratuitous even to mention his name in the same context, unless something has recently changed.
      .
Weston McKennie was injured only days ago, so will probably not play. Right? Anyone?
      .
William Yarbrough seems to have lost his starting slot weeks ago.
      .
Emperor’s-new-clothes question: Is there no way for SBI to actually get this information in time to share it with users? The list now reads like it was compiled by a computer with no clue about actual players from week to week. Some of the SBI writers probably know more than that, so why is no one asking them?
      .
But in the meantime, with no actual reporting, it seems unlikely that anyone will have an answer to the Sargent question until the team steps on the field.
      .
It just seems a shame to go to the trouble of making such a long list in the first place, and then not go ahead and take the extra step or two to keep it up to date and relevant. I would like to see SBI seize this opportunity and improve on the competition.

      • Its pretty hard actually across the pond especially if you don’t speak four or five languages to get a very accurate injury report. I tried for a while, I follow every large club that Americans play for on twitter and seldom do the clubs provide that information. Sometimes its in the clubs prematch report but unless the manager mentions it in their end of week presser it usually isn’t. I used to check bundesliga.com but it would say on Friday a player was out for the week and then they’d start the next day. Take Ream for example, Fulham first reported it was a minor injury and he’d be available week 2, well we are month passed that with no Ream. I agree especially for guys like Ream that we know have been injured at least in the Weekend Review they could add injured.

I mentioned Pulisic in my original post because people were speculating that he wasn’t really that hurt but just didn’t want to play for the national team last week.

  2. Been excited to see Ream with Fulham back in the Premier League, but it looks like it’s still going to be “a number of weeks.” I still think he belongs in the fold in the versatile LB discussion (especially over Lichaj) battling out with Robinson now, and wish we’d used him more in qualifying (although some of that was bad timing with minor knocks and what not).

    Anyway, from the coach:

“Right now, he’s a few weeks without working with the team and at the end, the last information that I have is positive and I cannot tell you exactly, but we hope he will be available soon to start working with the team.”

    • He played LB 3 times in 2016/17 and once last season. Although being left-footed puts him above Lichaj he doesn’t get forward well, and with our lack of creativity in the mild field we need FBs who can get involved in the offense.

    • Yes, there was just a Kicker article in German where the coach stated that Sargent is a first team player and his time with the U-23 team is to get him match fit. Also, the Werder Twitter account just posted a pic of the first team today and Sargent is in it. I’d bet he makes his debut by December, maybe earlier if they have a Cup match or a busy period in ththe schedule.

    • He’s been training with them all season despite playing with Werder II including this week. He and AJ both made the official team photo that was taken this week (33 players in it by my count). That would seem to be a good sign. Werder usually has a photo or two of him each week on Twitter so they are promoting him on both their English and German feed, I think it’s only a matter of time.
