Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Gooch, Novakovich, and more

Lynden Gooch helped Sunderland continue their impressive start to the English League One season with a strong performance on Saturday at home.

Gooch registered his first senior brace for the Black Cats as they downed Rochdale 4-1 at the Stadium of Light. After already sitting on a one-goal advantage, Gooch doubled Sunderland’s lead prior to halftime with a penalty kick finish. After the halftime break, Gooch added to his tally with a beautiful hit left-footed effort which found the bottom-left corner. The result pulled Sunderland to third in the league table as they travel to Bristol City next weekend.

Elsewhere, Christian Pulisic followed up his midweek performance in Europe with an equalizer at Hoffenheim in Bundesliga play. Weston McKennie left Schalke’s defeat vs. Bayern Munich before the hour mark with a bruised left ankle injury.

Andrija Novakovich scored a brace for Fortuna Sittard in a 4-4 draw against Willem II on Saturday. Romain Gall scored a goal and added an assist in a 4-0 romp for Malmo in Allsvenskan action. DeAndre Yedlin got another 90 minutes under his belt and helped keep a clean sheet for Newcastle United at Crystal Palace.

  1. Still too many DNP (Hyndman, Horvath, CCV, ) adnd DND (Sabbi, Weah, Holmes, Tillman, Gaines) for me. Many of these are players we’re looking to help turn the USMNT around this cycle.
Still there are some good signs for the USMNT’s future…
Our starting defense all went 90 again (Robinson, Brooks, Miazga, Yedlin). Moore & EPB also went 90.
In midfield Pulisic & Saief are back on the field. McKennie’s departure was not for something that should keep him out long term (didn’t brake his leg). Green, Gall, Gooch, Amon all went 90 and continue to make there case for call-ups to the Sr. USMNT.
Striker still remains a concern. Novak is the only 1 seeing consistent minutes & scoring on a 1st division club. Everyone else (Wood, Siebatcheu, ArJo, Sabbi, Sargent, & Soto) are either depth options or playing in youth sides. We need these guys to step up as we don’t have many options at striker.

    • When you are trying to build a roster not based on what they are doing now but what they might be four years from now this is what it looks like. You are going to have guys that rotate with others like Gall, or guys who take loans but aren’t used because an actual player for that team is showing well like Tillman or CCV. How often have we had 8 guys starting regularly in top 5 leagues? Even Dempsey, Jones, and Bradley generally didn’t start more than 50 to 65 % of their clubs games in Europe.
      ——————————————–
More on a couple guys you mentioned:
      ArJo is injured.
      —————————
Sabbi had started the previous 9 matches and had a yellow card in the previous match so I believe it might have been a suspension yellow accumulation but not sure of Danish rules. He has 5 goals in 9 matches so he’d qualify as a regular like Nova.
      —————————-
Weah went 83 minutes and scored a goal for PSG II (4th division).
      —————————-
Gaines transfer to Darmstadt last year I thought was odd because they don’t have U23 team.
      —————————-
Carter Vickers went 90 on Tuesday, his problem is he’s fighting for a spot with 20-year-old Welshman who came up in Swansea’s system. Rodon’s contract expires next Summer so Swansea needs to kick the tires to figure out if he’s worth keeping.

  2. Klinsmann was in net for Hertha Berlin II in a 3-0 win over BFC Dynamo. He’s 3-1-1 as a starter this season with 2 clean sheets.

  3. Larry Henry probably really hates me on Sunday afternoons.
    ———————
Marcel Costly a goal and an assist for Magdeburg in 2Bundesliga
    ———————
Jann George a goal for Jahn Regensberg vs Hamburg in 2Bundesliga.
    ———————-
Haji Wright back from injury 2nd goal of the season for Schalke II in the Oberliga (5th Division)
