Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Green, Amon, and more

Julian Green had an impressive showing with the U.S Men’s National Team during its recent friendlies and that carried over to club action this weekend.

Green came off the bench and netted a goal in Greuther Furth’s 4-1 win over Holstein Kiel in the 2. Bundesliga.

Despite not starting the match, Green was able to make an impact in a huge result for Furth. The 23-year-old got on the end of David Atanga’s assist and made no mistake, slotting in his first goal of the new campaign. The victory moves Furth to the top of the table in the German second-tier.

Elsewhere, John Brooks registered a game-tying assist as Wolfsburg held on for a point against Hertha Berlin. Jonathan Amon registered a goal and assist in Nordsjaelland’s home victory, while DeAndre Yedlin started for Newcastle against Arsenal.

Kyle Scott got more playing time in the Dutch second-tier despite Telstar’s road loss at Cambuur. Kenny Saief made his return to the Anderlecht squad, making a substitute appearance in their league loss at Genk.

    • He returned to full training late this Summer, he is currently with Arsenal’s U23 squad but has yet to suit (they play again Monday). He trained with the Arsenal first team last week with many regulars on national team duty. He’s unlikely to move anywhere this winter as his contract is up next Summer and no one will want to pay for something they can get for free later. He needs to just get fit and hopefully play in some cup matches so he can solidify a decent situation for next season.

  1. Seeing nice progress from many of our younger players:
Defense: Brooks, Miazga, Yedlin, Robinson. Likely starting backline all went 90. EPB went 90 & CCV got time off the bench.
Midfield: , Saief (returned), Green (Goal), Amon (goal/Assist), Hyndman (72), Scott (90), Gooch (90),
    Striker: Novak (90), Sabbi (90), Siebatcheu (85), Wood (25)

    Area’s of a concern:
Gall, De La Torre, Horvath, Pulisic (Injury), McKennie (Injury),

Would still like to have seen more of our players going the distance and getting in the box scores….but not a bad start to the season.

    • Malmo has a Europa League match Thursday, they’ve been rotating Gall so he starts one and sits one when they have two games in a week.
      —————————————————————————-
De La Torre started for Fulham U23s, he’s only 20. With the additions that Fulham made to try to stay up in the EPL he’s unlikely to see much of any minutes with the first team unless several get injured.

Horvath needs a move Brugge brought in a 21-year-old Croatian who has started every match this season.

  2. In the lower divisions, Weah got a goal for PSG II in the 4th Division, Chris Richards scored his 2nd of the year for Bayern U19, and Sebastian Soto scored a brace for Hanover U19 (his 4th in 3 league matches, someone on twitter said 6th in 6 across all competitions, but I couldn’t confirm what the cup matches were). 16-year-old defender Mason Judge also made his debut for Eintracht Frankfurt U17s and played the whole match.
