Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Sargent, Wood, and more

Josh Sargent is making every minute count for Werder Bremen’s U-23 side this season. Saturday saw the U.S. Men’s National Team striker bag his sixth goal of the season despite his team’s 3-1 loss to Hannover.

The 20-year-old played the full 90 minutes for Bremen’s U-23 side, pulling a goal back in the second-half. He was in the right spot at the right time, pouncing on a loose ball and finishing comfortably. His goal keeps him in the league leaders list for goals scored in the German Regionaliga despite Bremen seeing their two-match winning run snapped.

Elsewhere, Bobby Wood registered an assist off the bench for Hannover in their road loss at Eintracht Frankfurt. Joe Gyau scored his first goal of the 2. Bundesliga season for Duisburg despite their home loss on Saturday.

Sebastian Soto continued his strong season with Hannover’s U-19 side, scoring in their home win. Andrija Novakovich played the full 90 minutes for Fortuna Sittard in their tough loss to Ajax. Weston McKennie saw time off the bench for Schalke after an injury scare a week ago.

  1. While Pulisic isn’t playing badly, he really needs to step up his game even more to avoid losing playing time to Jadon Sancho. Sancho is a year younger and probably England’s top talent in that age range. He’s registered 5 assists already, which puts him at #1 in the league and the fact that he’s doing so with limited minutes says something. I don’t see Reus dropping to the bench either, and while Pulisic always has a few highlight runs in him, they don’t always seem to translate to goals/assists.

    • The one thing he has going is that Sancho has looked pretty pedestrian in his limited starts and is a huge weapon off the bench but i agree Sancho is hot on his heels for PT. I know Reus has a few goals lately but he seems to do very little else throughout the course of the game. Id like to see pulisic with Alcacer, someone who seems to be able to put the ball in the net. Pulisics final ball is his next stage of development. That final pass. He seems to be able glide by people in the open but has trouble creating juat enough space to get his own shot in traffic

  2. A little humblr pie for Weah lately? I read he made the squad list but then not in the 18, is that 4 games in a row? So im assuming hes not injured. Did those, “i chose not to go out on loan, despite the team wanting it” comments hurt him? I know that team is stacked with offennsive talent but he made the bench week in week out last season.

    • He’s been playing with PSG II and scored a couple goals. He only made 7 benches last season, mostly when three or four of Neymar, Mbappe, DiMaria, and Cavani were injured. PSG has gone more with Diaby 19-year-old Frenchman because he is more of a two-way player and they see Weah as a Forward. Diaby can play both Wing and Midfield.

  3. Have to say I am pleasantly surprised to have not heard a single idiot suggest Frank Rijkaard for the USMNT job. He ticks all of the boxes (speaks English, has elite European coaching pedigree, has national team coaching experience, still comparatively young, and is available in the market). Not to mention his most recent “coaching” gig was as a consultant a high school in Florida. Nevermind that he is a mediocre coach (my dog could’ve won the Champions League with that Barcelona side) and a subpar human being. Still, would’ve thought the Barcelona pedigree alone would’ve aroused the interest of some of the Eurosnobs on here

  4. Ventura Alvarado plays 90 minutes every week for Atlas. I guess we don’t need any more CBs. I assume he’s doing well in a pretty good league. Anyone follow MX enough to comment?

  5. Hannover playing away from home is as bad as watching Hamburg play away the last few years. Looks like Bobby Wood will be starved of service again, and will have to make the most of the few chances that come his way.

    • Hey perhaps Manchester City will buy him for $90 million and play him 90 mins every week!

I’m sick of making excuses for Bobby. Dude is not a cripple or something. He is not being transferred between internment camps. He can make his own career choices and he can also make himself valuable by scoring. Ain’t nothin’ free in this world.

      • Wow. You managed to belittle the physically disabled with your slur and also trivialize internment camps in a single post. Bless your narrow minded heart.

      • Bobby is the best US forward in the pool until Sargent get’s up to speed. Not much upside to his game now, so you know what you’ll get: he hustles and chases down defenders, wins balls in the air, works a great 1-2 (see his assist yesterday) and runs onto through balls. He’s easily the most up and down forward we’ve had in terms of attitude: when he’s frustrated or down, his body language completely changes.
Hannover’s defense looked very bad against Frankfurt and their midfielders were not holding the ball, and if they keep on trying to play the ball out of the back it’s going to be a long season. He created a chance for a teammate right off of the 2nd half kick-off, yet somehow Hannover ended up playing more passes back to their ‘keeper.
He earned a start for this week. His last start he played for 30 minutes until a teammate was red-carded and Wood was taken out for a midfielder. If he knocks in a half dozen goals and has as many assists I’d be pretty happy for him. I don’t think Hannover’s going to score a lot this season.

  6. In addition to the assist that he had, late in the game Wood made a strong run down his right flank and made an excellent cross right to an open teammate in front of goal. His teammate skied it over the bar when he should have put it away. Not only did that deny Wood another assist, had he scored Hannover would have pulled within a goal. Instead Frankfurt soon thereafter went down the field and scored again, putting the game completely out of reach.

  7. While not a stellar weekend for our players abroad, there were still some positives….
McKennie coming off the bench when most thought he’d be sidelined for a while with an injury provides a major boost to the team ahead of the break.
Pulisic is healthy and contributing (goals & assists), giving us the creative player we lacked in the last series of friendlies.
Our starting backl-ine are all going 90 (Yedlin, Robinson, Brooks, Miazga).

Would have preferred better performances/minutes from the rest of the European contingent (Weah, Green, Gall, Saief, Gooch, Wood, etc….), but there are still some cause for hope that they and others will help move the USMNT forwards.

  8. Mukwelle Akale, registered a brace for Villareal B in the Spanish Segunda B (Third Division) in a 4-1 victory over CE Sabadell in his first league start. He started midweek and scored a goal against Swansea in the Premier Leauge International Cup.

  9. The roster for next weeks friendlies is supposed to drop Monday, ten days before the first match. Apparently, US Soccer is listening to the fans. Not a great weekend for the US, don’t think anyone played their way onto the roster. Please Gooch, Amon, or Gall, I can’t watch our DMs try to fill in on the wing again. Would like for Canouse to get called as well but DC has a game that weekend and the day after Peru, so likely no Arriola either.
