Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Yedlin, Sargent, and more

DeAndre Yedlin had waited for his chance to score his first English Premier League goal for Newcastle United. On Saturday, it came on the biggest stage against the defending English champions.

Yedlin bagged his first top-flight goal in England despite Newcastle’s 2-1 road loss to Manchester City. The U.S. Men’s National Team defender got on the end of Salomon Rondon’s cross and finished past Ederson. Despite the equalizer, the Magpies eventually conceded a second goal in a loss to the reigning champions. It was the second-straight match that Yedlin registered a point and the first goal scored by an American in the EPL since Geoff Cameron scored for Stoke in 2014.

Elsewhere, Andrija Novakovich bagged his second goal of the Eredivisie season for Fortuna Sittard. Emmanuel Sabbi is now tied for the Danish Superliagen league-lead in goals following another strong performance this weekend.

Alfredo Morales got the start for Fortuna Dusseldorf in Bundesliga play, while John Brooks and Fabian Johnson started in their respective matches as well. Christian Pulisic missed out due to a muscular problem for Borussia Dortmund in their draw at Hannover.

  1. Read somewhere shaq Moore has been having problems with his paperwork from his loan and hasn’t been cleared to play yet

  2. Not McKinney’s best match. He started at right fullback and looked very uncomfortable. Completely wiffed on a 50/50 ball that led to Berlin’s first goal.

    • Agreed, McKinney looked out of sorts at RB. Hertha keyed in on him with long balls to their winger after that first chance (that missed). However, he played a great ball in to Naldo that had great potential to score. Once he switched to central mid, he broke up quite a few plays and was pretty active overall (with sharp and dull passing). He seems to have difficulty containing the 1v1 long ball to shifty wingers (hope it’s correctable and not endemic). I dunno, 5 of 10 maybe? I mean, Rudy was subbed out and Schalke as a whole didn’t look so sharp today, overall. With that said, dude rocks.
