DeAndre Yedlin had both highs and lows a week ago against Chelsea. The Newcastle wingback gave his team a spark on Saturday against the defending Premier League champs.
The U.S. Men’s National Team right back leveled the score against Manchester City, making it 1-1 at the Etihad Stadium. He’s the first American to score in the Premier LEague since Geoff Cameron did in March 2014.
Raheem Sterling left Yedlin in the dust as City grabbed an early lead through the winger’s strong right-footed finish.
However, Yedlin kept his head and netted his first Newcastle goal since Sept. 2016. Salomon Rondon’s hold-up play in the 30th minute allowed Yedlin to make himself available in the box.
Rondon’s crossing pass his Yedlin in stride and the 25-year-old slotted past Brazilian international Ederson.

Newcastle are seeking their first win of the season after two defeats and a draw in their opening three league matches.
don’t think sterling’s goal was really yedlin’s fault. he saw he had defensive cover on the inside (can’t remember who it was) and decided to cut off sterling’s path to the end line. not sure what the other defender was doing though, since i believe he ended up directly behind yedlin.
Nah that goal was on Lascelles all the way.
I find it rather amazing and depressing that it has been over 4 years since an American has scored in the EPL and then it was another defender, Geoff Cameron. Just this season so far Weah scored for PSG, F Johnson and Brooks have both scored in the Bundesliga and I think even Timmy Chandler scored last season, along with several other Americans in the Bundesliga.
Don’t despair GP…. I love watching the EPL as much as the next guy, but it’s easy to get carried away with the idea that it is the end-all, be-all of elite soccer. Let’s have some fun with statistics (meaningless of course, but you might be surprised what we can demonstrate if we tilt the numbers enough!)
**************************
Consider this – if we were to use the recent World Cup Final (France-Croatia) as a benchmark of “high caliber” soccer, it might interest some to learn that between both squads, only 12 of the combined 45 players (26.6%) had *ever* played in the EPL at any point in their careers. And among this, only 8 players (17.8%) had ever scored in the EPL.
*********************************
By comparison, let’s take the most recent US World Cup Roster (2014). Of this 23 man group (all of whom are still active, with the recent exception of Dempsey), 8 players (33.3%) have played in the EPL, and 6 players (26.1% – includes Dempsey, Beasley, Cameron, Altidore, Yedlin, and yes, Howard) have scored in the EPL.
**********************************
Am I making a point here? No. Of course not. But it is kind of interesting, yes?
“……against Manchester City” no less, congrats kid!!!!
He now is halfway to Jozy for EPL goals!
While everybody walks around with a massive hard-on for Pulisic Yedlin has quietly become the best American player over the last 12 months.
End of story.
…… amongst those that that actually watch games.
I love irony.
I think it’s a reasonable debate, however I disagree with your conclusion having watched many matches. Yedlin obviously holds the edge over Pulisic in athleticism. However, Pulisic holds the edge in technical skill. Pulisic has much more influence on the game though week in and week out.
You have already said that, as if nobody likes Yedlin, stupid. Go do your chores before tu madre makes you clean her dirty butthole with your mouth.
Hahaha…hoohoohoo. No, seriously, you were joking, right?
Quality cross and great run from Yedlin but who is the left back or mid that Yedlin abused? Either lack of effort or he’s just to slow to mark Yedlin.
On the replay you could see that Yedlin came from way deep and Man City pretty much ignored him.
To answer your question, the guy who got abused by Yedlin was actually a forward — Gabriel Jesus. Yedlin correctly recognized that City were caught out of their normal organization and Jesus was the guy tasked with tracking him back. If you watch the replay, you can see Yedlin recognizes this very early and starts waving for the ball shortly after he crosses the half line. Great ball in to feed him the goal, no doubt…. but excellent recognition from Yedlin, who is typically tasked with a “defend first” job by Benitez but saw the opportunity and continued his sprint.
