Inter Miami CF is new name for Beckham’s MLS expansion team

David Beckham’s MLS expansion team in Miami finally has a name and logo, and it’s definitely a different approach than recent MLS expansion efforts.

Club Internacional de Futbol Miami, Inter Miami for short, will be the new name of the Miami MLS expansion team set to begin play in 2020.

Here’s the club’s breakdown of its name and logo:

Club Internacional de Fútbol Miami is a name that celebrates the incredible energy of one of the most exciting cities in the world – one that is diverse, passionate and ambitious – a city that has welcomed me and so many others, so warmly. Our club will be a home for all – no matter where you are from or how you got here. This is just the beginning of our journey as we continue to build towards our first game in 2020.

The new team still hasn’t solidified a permanent stadium solution, but it’s long and drawn out journey to joining MLS appears to be drawing to a close, with Wednesday’s announcement of a name and logo taking it one step closer to reality.

What do you think of the name and logo?

  1. Inter Milan for the football club of Milan, a city in northern Italy, capital of Lombardy
Inter Miami for the football club of Miami, an international city in Florida……I see you Becks. Doesn’t roll off the tongue yet but I see what he is trying to do. A lot of fans know the name INTER so it will be easier to transition

  2. Ok, I dig the crest and the flamingos, but “definitely a different approach” doesn’t quite sit right. The typical (and equal parts headscratching/infuriating) approach is to identify a European powerhouse and snatch their moniker (Yeah you, “Real” Salt Lake, Houston “Dynamo” and “Sporting” KC — I will ignore the obvious “United” whatever) or their logo and aesthetic (Borussia Ohio — at least those construction dudes were an original concept that had something to do with the midwest).

But this seems like a “more-of-the-same” approach, just co-opting the moniker of an established Serie A powerhouse and rebranding it as somehow American. Our league doesn’t need commentators with British accents to validate it, and we don’t need Euro-retread names and crests.

Big ups to MLS teams who are cool and original and didn’t try to steal somebody else’s identity to give themselves some kind of leg up by kissing the asses of Eurosnob fanboys. Teams that have an actual connection to their city and fan base: San Jose Earthquakes, New England Revolution, Vancouver Whitecaps, Chicago Fire, Seattle Sounders, Portland Timbers, LA Galaxy (stars, LA, ok whatever, but it’s legit), and the one team who is truly positioned by dint of chance and ownership to cop the name of a European power, the Colorado Rapids, who probably should have been called the Rocky Mountain Arsenal from the start.

As far as I’m concerned the rest of them are just FCs, SCs, and Uniteds, except the Impact, who sound more like a WNBA or lacrosse team. The Montreal Alouettes are an apt franchise name if ever I heard one.
