The return of UEFA Champions League headlines this Week’s Soccer on TV

The UEFA Champions League group stage returns this week as it highlights an entire four days worth of continental action on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean.

Leading the way in this opening salvo of Champions League matches is a tilt between Real Madrid and AS Roma on Wednesday afternoon. The three time defending European Champions begin their quest for continental supremacy without Cristiano Ronaldo for the first time in nearly a decade with a tricky test against one of Italy’s elite clubs.

The Europa League also starts on Thursday with a bunch of smaller European outfits leading the way. Scotland’s Glasgow Rangers take on Villarreal in their first foray back into Europe since financial trouble forced them down to the fourth division of the Scottish football pyramid.

There is also competitive action in the Western Hemisphere as the Copa Libertadores, Copa Sudamericana, and the CONCACAF League feature plenty of matches. Toronto FC and Tigres UANL also face each other in the first Campeones Cup on Wednesday.

Thank you for getting this info out at the first of the week; a good step for SBI.
    .
Hard to imagine why anyone would begrudge others the chance to watch international soccer on the highest level. Even if many can’t watch live on a weekday afternoon, some of us record and watch later, or catch repeats or highlights, in part to follow players from the US and Latin America.
    .
As Helium-3 said, SBI seemed to miss that some bigger games featuring Hispanic or MLS teams are also on over-the-air Univisión or UniMás, not only UDN as listed.
    .
Univisión – over the air in major markets, also standard cable
UniMás – second digital channel over the air, also standard cable
    Galavisión – standard cable
Univisión Deportes Network (UDN) – premium cable
Univisión app (green & white logo) – streaming
    .
Here are some revised listings for Wednesday.
    .
12:55 p.m. – TNT, UniMás, UDN – Ajax vs. AEK Athens

    5 p.m. – UniMás – Misión Europa (complete 1-hour postgame show)
    .
    8:30 p.m. – ESPN2, Univisión, UDN – Toronto FC vs. Tigres UANL
    .
11 p.m. – UniMás, UDN – San Jose Earthquakes vs. Atlanta United

I’d especially like to recommend the postgame show on UniMás, which had 30 minutes’ more highlights in a better presentation, while TNT couldn’t seem to get its video clips organized even to show the late birthday goal by Pulisic. It was indeed something of a fluke, but as the guys said, to be lucky you have to be in the right place at the right time, and think and act fast. He was, and he did.

    • hello tejana, i don’t begrudge anyone to do anything. watch anything you want. this website is sbi, “soccer with an American voice.” this is not a euro sports website. the focus here – and the primary point of view – is always american. here we talk about euro sports TO THE EXTENT, MAINLY, THAT AMERICANS PLAYED IN THE GAMES. but purely euro? not here, no. not really.

      Reply
      • euro discussions here are “side discussions”, yes? here, concacaf, mls, usl, usa college are more important; they are the focus here, yes?

      • Pardon me: are you an owner or admin of the website? Surely its focus is for them to decide. If they didn’t want to cover international soccer, they wouldn’t, but they do.
        .
The emphasis can even change over time, as more Americans become interested in the game, the domestic league grows stronger precisely as it interests more young international players, and more US players develop the skill to play in the top leagues. All of that should only continue to strengthen the domestic game at lower levels, even down to college and youth soccer.
        .
Either way it’s not a zero-sum game, so you don’t have to be possessive or defensive. If the site covers international soccer and people like it and respond, that doesn’t mean it will necessarily offer less coverage of domestic soccer, as long as people still respond to it as well. The internet isn’t a finite space; there’s room for everyone.
        .
I continue to think that more high-quality, entertaining soccer on US airwaves, and more American voices showing interest and discussing the game, is a good thing. Many soccer websites would agree.

  2. What an amazing game of football between Liverpool and PSG just now. Stunning, end to end stuff, advert to the beautiful game. One eyed Bobby for the win!
Another sublime Messi recital as well!
The best football competition in the world is back with a bang!!!!Wow!!!

  3. I hate soccer-bashing by soccer fans, who seem intent on telling people what soccer they should and should NOT watch.

People watch the Champions League in Asia, Africa, and South America. The idea North Americans should ignore it because it is foreign is at best myopic and at worst the kind of proud, defiant ignorance I prefer Americans not be so renowned for.

    • did i say “don’t watch the ucl”? i don’t think i did. the article says “The return of UEFA Champions League headlines this Week’s Soccer on TV” and that is not an american point of view to say that. you can watch whatever you want, clyde_frog. watch all the euro you want. just sayin’, from an American point of view, the focus this week is on the big campeones cup match between tigres and toronto on wed. night. from an American point of view, we see the soccer world that way. it’s not myopia, it’s our valid point of view. just as people in europe have their equally valid point of view.

  4. if guys here enjoy watching some good euro footy, i certainly don’t want to take away any from their fun. i guess i personally don’t follow it, though.

in addition to mls, usl and campeones cup in north american soccer this week, i’m also reading about this:

What is the Concacaf Nations League, and how does it work?
    https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2018/09/05/what-concacaf-nations-league-and-how-does-it-work

this, not the euro league, should be the bigger news story. in this hemishere, anyway. just my opinion.

    • ” The four group winners from League C will be promoted to League B.”

my two cents: this is stupid. forgive me? but the top four, microscopic island nations out of group C are, well, still microscopic island nations and nothing in the soccer world is going to change that. promoting the group C winners to group B to be fodder for next year’s cannons is silly to me. i hate to say “cancel pro/rel”, i know a lot of guys like that. maybe just limit it a bit more? only promote two teams instead of four?

in europe, it makes more sense when a formerly shallow-pocketed club gets suddenly gets new owners with far deeper pockets (manchester city, yes?) thus they’re almost like a new club and can compete on a higher level, thus promotion makes sense imo. but we’re not talking about anything like that here. i would say each year in cnl just allow one team to go up and one team to go down between the three levels a, b and c. when these nations are correctly put into groups, basically, that’s where they should stay after year.

      • wrestlers are grouped for tournaments by weight (not skill rating) and nobody complains about that. we can divide the 41 nations of concacaf into three groups BY POPULATION SIZE and it would be analagous, i think. also like boxers; mexico, the usa and canada would be like the “heavy weights” (largest size populations); nicaragua, honduras “middle weights” and island nations (no offense intended) the “light weights” (smallest size populations). and cut out pro/rel completely and just leave the groups that way. just my two cents.

    • last year’s winning light weight wrestlers don’t get “promoted” to the middle weights the next year. the worst middle weight wrestlers don’t get “demoted” down to the light weights. see? and nobody is complaining about that, are they? i think we can borrow the idea and we can use it for soccer, too, in the cnl.

  5. “The return of UEFA Champions League headlines this Week’s Soccer on TV”. haha where is that, in europe? here in the usa, weeks 27 action wrapped up in america’s second tier of pro soccer as follows:

    sbnation reports:

    “USL
    AROUND THE USL
USL Weekly Attendance Report: Week 27

    Week 27 USL Matches
There were 17 games in USL action for Week 27. Here are a few highlights from the stands:

    – Republic FC listed their 14th consecutive sellout of the season with a familiar 11,569.
    – San Antonio FC crested over the 8k mark for the fourth time this season – just missing their season high by 6 people.
    – Tampa Bay Rowdies set a new season high with 7,786 piling in to see a matchup against Charlotte Independence after nearly a month away from home.
    – Louisville City put up 6,698 in a midweek matchup against Rochester Rhinos.
    – Reno had two matches this week with 6,001 coming to see a matchup againt OKC on Wednesday and 5,640 on Saturday against T2.
    – Ottawa Fury and Richmond Kickers both drew around 6k in Week 27.”

not trying to be mean or anything, but what does christiano ronaldo (if he’s not coming to mls) have to do with american soccer? NOTHING. absolutely NOTHING. if you guys really aim to report about american soccer, just point your browsers to uslsoccer.com. THAT’S american soccer (the second tier).
