Weston McKennie diagnosed with a bruised knee

Thankfully for the U.S. Men’s National Team and Schalke 04, the knee injury Weston McKennie suffered on Tuesday against Mexico wasn’t serious.

U.S. Soccer announced that McKennie has been diagnosed with a bruised left knee. Originally thought to have suffered a knee strain, McKennie received his new diagnosis after returning to Germany and being evaluated by Schalke’s medical team.

There is no timetable yet on when McKennie will return to action for Schalke. He has started both of Schalke’s Bundesliga matches so far this season, playing all 180 minutes.

  1. Glad he’s not down with an ACL. McKinnie, to me, is our direct replacement for Jermaine Jones and we need him. Badly.

My own opinion is that current USMNT personnel very much suits the 4-3-3 and McKinnie could feature at any of the midfielder slots. We have some centerforwards (Altidore, Zardes, Wood) and plenty of guys who can play the 6 (McKinnie, Adams, Trapp, Acosta) OR a shuttler role in a 4-3-3…what we don’t have is any true wingers. We do have some guys like Pulisic/Weah/Green who can play as outside forwards or 10’s so we’re very much going to have to get our width from our outside backs…fortunately we do have athletes at outside back – guys like Yedlin/Robinson/Moore and even Villafana can get forward and allow the likes of Pulisic/Weah/Green to pinch in and combine with the CF…and that’s where stuff happens.

If we really commit to the 4-3-3 and go with it, I think we’ll do OK…and maybe better than that. And that means lot more of McKinnie.

    • I like the thinking. I also like Pulisic more central, so a diamond mid with Pulisic at top appeals as well. Essentially you have your three hard working mids, a withdrawn center striker, two strikers, and you still get your overlapping backs. Each system has its drawbacks but the appeal of Pulisic, Sargent, Weah near goal, and a capable supporting cast – we could be very good.

  2. Now the issue is if it is a bruise to the muscle or the bone. Bone bruises can be quite painful and take quite a while to heal. Still, it’s good news.
