McKennie scores first career Bundesliga goal

It’s been a week to remember for U.S. Men’s National Team midfielder Weston McKennie. After propelling Schalke to their first win in the UEFA Champions League, McKennie’s continued his strong form in front of goal.

The 20-year-old’s close range finish in the 47th minute, broke a scoreless match between Schalke and Fortuna Dusseldorf.

Suat Serdar’s headed pass hit McKennie in stride which allowed the midfielder to slot in his first career Bundesliga goal.

Guido Burgstaller’s left-footed finish in the 51st minute doubled Schalke’s second-half advantage. The visitors would hang on for their second Bundesliga victory of the season, which sees them jump out of the bottom-three.

However, the midfielder would leave in the 79th minute with an injury that has yet to be determined. McKennie is next to join the USMNT for their pair of upcoming friendlies against Colombia and Peru, but his fitness could be in jeopardy due to his latest knock.

    • I could be wrong, but having Morales on the team means there is zero reason why Bradley should ever be called in and Sarachan has known Michael Bradley since he was a boy. Prime Morales will probably never get a shot. Unless the coach is a complete outsider.

      • They don’t really play the same position. Morales would more compete with Nagbe, Adams, and McKinnie. Bradley is competing with Trapp. Bradley’s inclusion has more to do with Sarachan’s style of play than his fathers connections.

  1. On a completely different line, Ives reported on his twitter that final interviews for USMNT have begun. When asked about it Berhalter responded “no comment”, which sounds intriguing but really is what he would answer no matter what. The word was “interviews” though after Stewart had said last month perhaps only one candidate would be interviewed.

  2. Alfredo Morales just had a killer shot on goal….saved by Ralf Fährmann. That would have been epic!!!! Wood, Mckennie then Morales……damn

      • Here’s the manager’s post-match quote sounds like he’s fine. “It’s a very good sign when players like @WMckennie are so tired at the end of games. The first goal was very important for our confidence. Well done to my team.”

      • But Twitter reports are saying one to two weeks and he’ll stay in Germany. I would expect Bedoya or Nagbe as a replacement given the late timing.
