Sargent’s days as strictly a U-23 player over, says Bremen coach

Josh Sargent’s international break just keeps getting better.

The U.S. Men’s National Team forward scored his second international goal against Peru on Tuesday and his performances overall have impressed his head coach at Werder Bremen so much that his first-team debut could be right around the corner.

“This period in which [Sargent] plays exclusively in the U23s is over,” Bremen head coach Florian Kohfeldt said. “He looks to be a long way beyond that now.”

Sargent’s goal against Peru also got Kohfelt excited to have the young American back with his team.

“It was a nice goal,” concluded Kohfeldt. “I’ll be happy to have him back here.”

Sargent has torn up the U-23 ranks in Germany already. He has six goals and two assists in 10 appearances for Bremen’s reserve squad. He joined Werder Bremen in January and was eligible for the first team when he turned 18 in February. He hasn’t made that jump yet, but the strong praise from his head coach could mean he gets there as soon as Saturday when Bremen face Schalke 04.

  1. He is our future…not Wood and certainly not Jozy. All the kid needs as a manager (to be named) that believes in him. Lets hope Ernie picks well

  2. Bremen already announced on their twitter that he will not be with the first team this weekend but will play for them in a midweek friendly next Tuesday.

  3. I like the kid but when is he going to get mins, they are already scoring goals and are in good position in the table. So why would they play him in front of someone who has contributed already

  4. Well, I hope he gets actual minutes on the pitch. Maybe they can loan him out to a Bundesliga 2 side come January. That might be best for his development.

  5. If WB II = WB U-23 then the only step up left is the first team.

As the article notes, the key word is “exclusively,” it may be a back and forth arrangement where if he gets minutes with the first team he doesn’t play the II game, etc. Kind of like MLS used to do with the reserve league.

    • This seems to be what the coach is saying. He will shuttle between first team and U-23 teams, and get occasional minutes from the bench or in Cup games. Great progress for Sarg.
