SBI USMNT Man of the Match: Josh Sargent

U.S. Men’s National Team striker Josh Sargent may have not had the most looks offensively but the 18-year-old made his effort count when it mattered.

Sargent scored his second senior goal for the USMNT as they drew 1-1 against Peru on Tuesday night in Hartford. It was Sargent’s fifth senior appearance and his finish came from a nicely set up assist from Kellyn Acosta.

Acosta’s low-driven cross on a set piece found Sargent just inside of the Peru box. The Werder Bremen forward swung a right foot and got some help on the way through. A deflection helped the effort find the bottom-left corner which was the lone goal in the match. It was Sargent’s best contribution in the match after failing to get much going in the opening 45 minutes.

Sargent beat out Acosta, Jonathan Amon, and Cameron Carter-Vickers for Man of the Match honors.

What did you think of Sargent’s performance? Do you think he can win a permanent spot with the team? How do you see this performance carrying over to the return of his domestic season?

  1. Can’t think of anyone else who deserves motm. I am as excited as the rest about Sargent, but I think the USMNT needs to be patient with him and let him establish his club career before calling him in every time. Sadly, he may be our best option there right now, but he hasn’t even made the first team at Bremen yet. If he is going to be an impact player for the USMNT down the road, then he will have to crack Bremen’s lineup and produce for them.

  2. The thing about his game is his selflessness and I think this has to do with age. He combines well with other players and just doesn’t try to do everything himself. It would be exciting to see him strengthen his chemistry with players around him like Weah, Pulisic, Green etc. No one really stood out for me on the USMNT but the kid’s style of play, regardless of the goal, and one touch passing in the final third (when we were able to get there) was promising

  3. Get some one to write this column who knows about the game. Sargent used one of is very few opportunities to score a very important goal. Soccer is a team sport. He did what was expected and necessary when it was possible.

    • We haven’t had a forward who puts away his one chance in a game in well . . . forever. yes ther are 11 guys on the field, but if 1 is the keeper, the other 9 play defense and pass sideways, and this kid scores a goal on a set piece when he is supposed to, HE GETS MAN OF THE MATCH EVERY GAME.

  4. Next month you have the U20 qualifying knock rounds during the international window. Do you have Weah, Sargent, Amon play the friendlies or for the U20s?

  5. Weah worked his butt off all night especially tracking back, and had a few good moments forward when he got the ball. He would be my motm

    • I reallllly hate comparing young players to the top top pros, but I actually had the exact same thought last night. He’t not a burner, but has great feet, creates space with clever turns/touches to get off a shot or pass, great technique. Very similar style of player to Kane.

  6. This kid is really, really exciting. Very hard not to get excited about what a front three of him, Weah, and Pulisic could look like an a couple of years.
