Zack Steffen forced out of USMNT camp with hamstring tightness

The U.S. Men’s National Team’s current No. 1 goalkeeper will not participate in Tuesday’s friendly against Peru.

Zack Steffen was forced to leave USMNT camp on Saturday due to tightness in his right hamstring.

With the Major League Soccer playoff push coming up with the Columbus Crew, Steffen withdrew from the roster as a precautionary measure.

Brad Guzan and Ethan Horvath are the remaining goalkeepers on the roster, and there’s a good chance the experienced Guzan receives a chance to start in Hartford on Tuesday night.

Since the USMNT failed to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, Steffen’s been the first-choice goalkeeper, as he’s earned six caps for Dave Sarachan’s side.

  1. Steffan is definitely our number one. I’m a big fan. That said- we sure could use a few more young keepers to step up their game put some pressure on and give us some options. I thought Steffan had a decent match against Colombia- none of the goals were his fault. I think he’d say there were a few he definitely could have had on a better day. A top of the food chain keeper needs to not only be rock solid in making the saves he should and also fairly frequently doing the spectacular… stopping some he should not. In order to hang with a stacked team like Colombia we need our keeper standing on his head. He definitely has the tools… unfortunately this wasn’t one of those days.

    • Jesse Gonzalez is better than Guzman and Horvath. I do not get why he is not called up. You also have Kyle Parks Eaton Parks brother who plays in Portugal he is 22 you have Kevin Silva 20 plays for hearts in Scotland

      • Kevin Silva doesn’t play for Hearts he’s on their books, but is loaned to Scottish League One side (3rd level) Ardith Rivers were he had yet to play. Kyle Parks joined CD Trofense from another 3rd Division side on a free transfer and doesn’t appear to actually play either but it’s hard to tell since he’s playing st such a low level there is next to no coverage. Your rating of GKs seems to be if I haven’t seen them play they must be better than the guy I have seen.

      • Haven’t seen Jesse much in a while but had him in mind for sure. Last cycle we definitely did our young keepers a disservice in staying exclusively w/ Howard Guzman and Rimando. Our young keepers growth was retarded by… complacency and neglect. Guess some assume the USA goalkeeper machine is an entitlement rather than something that has to be worked on.

      • FC Dallas had a game Saturday, in which Gonzalez maybe should maybe have done more, but either way he probably wasn’t available even if Sarachan wanted to bring him in. FCD is going for the Supporter’s Shield and home-field advantage.

    • Anyone know anything about 18 year old CJ Dos Santos that plays for as a keeper and he was on the US u20 squad for Madrid inventational

      • Playing for Benfica U19 from his own Twitter account it seems he plays but the regular outlets don’t list lineups for their U19 squad

  2. Can’t believe and disappointed Horvath is not on the same path as a young Brad Fridel. I remember against Portugal he let a easy save go through his leg for a goal. I have also seen him do this for Club Brugge

  3. I suppose it makes sense to Sarachan to start Guzan, as well as Bradley and Wood. NOT! I don’t know who Peru is bringing but in the WC, they were the best team I saw that didnt advance. They were highly skilled and I expect them to give the USA a very hard time

    • They just beat their arch rival, Chile 3-0 in Florida.
They are playing excellently with young forwards this time. Connecticut is close to New Jersey so it wouldn’t surprise me to seeing tons of Peruvians going to this one as well.
