Americans Abroad Weekend Preview: Sargent, Pulisic to meet in first Bundesliga showdown

Josh Sargent recently became the latest member of the U.S. Men’s National Team to make his Bundesliga debut. The 18-year-old kicked off his first appearance with a bang and will now meet a familiar foe this weekend.

Sargent and Werder Bremen will aim to follow up last weekend’s victory with a trip to Christian Pulisic and Borussia Dortmund on Saturday. The duo are two of many young faces with the USMNT but will look to continue to grow their games abroad. It will also be the first-ever meeting between Sargent and Pulisic in the Bundesliga, should they both feature.

Elswhere, Danny Williams and Huddersfield Town face DeAndre Yedlin and Newcastle United. Tim Ream will encounter his third London Derby of the season in all competitions as Fulham face West Ham United at Craven Cottage. Geoff Cameron headlines the EFL Championship action this weekend with QPR hosting Middlesbrough.

Bobby Wood faces a tough test against Bayern Munich, while John Brooks returns from suspension for Wolfsburg on Friday. Ethan Horvath continues to start for Club Brugge and will face a road match this weekend. Jonathan Amon returned to league action a week ago, and now will seek a start for Nordsjaelland.

  1. The Bundesliga has games on Tue/Wed this week. I’m confident we will see more Yanks on the field who don’t see action today.

  2. A pretty bad Saturday for Yanks abroad. So far, only Haji Wright, Julian Green and Lyden Gooch made it on the pitch. Let’s see if Pulisic and Sargent will get minutes later.

  3. I hate to go all Debbie Downer here but am i the only one feeling like this season has been a major disappointment from a “whos next” perspective. Coming off the summer, and after all the excitement about integrating the youth and waiting to see who and how many youngsters would break out this year with their club teams, let me give my quick summary. Hyndman = failed loan. Pulisic= lost his starting job. 50% of the minutes he had at this point last year. McKennie = still in the rotation but not an auto-starter and injured. Miazga= lost his place in the team. Weah = lost place in the team. Gooch = who cares about the 3rd division. Green = no offensive numbers. Wood = decent move, but mostly not good enough productuon. CCV = failed loan. Carleton = less than 200 MLS minutes. Sargeant = on pace to break through, no complaints. Rest of the bunch = a bunch of modestly successful loans or stints on 2nd division clubs, but nothing to write home about. Im sure im oversimplifying and there (wright with his BL debut) some positives out there but not the kind of top 5 league break-out many of us were hoping to see.

    • Not disagreeing with most of what u said but Weah wasn’t ever really in the team, he was only playing while world cup players made it back to full fitness and is going on loan this winter and for Emo he has been injured but when he has been healthy has played fairly well just not the scoring he had at loan on Rangers. Miazga was starting till a new manager came in changed things. Lets wait and see what happens over the rest of the season before its called a failure.

    • @Gary, I think your assessment was pretty accurate. In a way, it helps us USMNT fans correctly adjust our over the top expectations on the young US stars plying their trade in Europe. We are still long way from becoming world elites in soccer.

    • Yes, I was going to mention that. He got a straight red which means a 3 game suspension in the EPL unless they changed the rules recently.

      • Wow, a 3-game suspension! That’s pretty harsh. Yedlin’s foul was a professional obstruction and didn’t hurt his opponent, but unfortunately he was the last defender in front of the goalie. On the other hand, Man U’s Antonio Valencia’s vicious stomp on Valencia’s Toni Lato’s leg during Wednesday Champions League deserved a straight red (but only a yellow).

    • Right you were. Sargent got maybe 5-8 minutes and Pulisic got 2 min + stoppage time. If Dortmund doesnt want to play him, maybe they’ll trade him somewhere where he can get minutes. Not sure if Sargent even touched the ball

      • Sargent did clear the ball on what would otherwise have been a Dortmund counter. He also had a heavy touch to lose the ball and on a 2nd ocassion lost the ball then got a yellow card for fouling in retaliation.
Pulisic made what first looked like a good pass to spring a well-worked counter, but it was called back for offside (he should have held onto the ball since it looked like 3 of his teammates were in offfside positions; the one who got the ball was clearly off).
        Not their best days.

    • Dortmund is really loaded this season, so it’s not a surprise that Pulisic is not starting. Neither is Mario Goetze. I looked him up and he is only 26 and just a couple of years ago he was considered one of the best German footballers. Dortmund is now leading the league by 9 points which is incredible for this point in the season.

      Reply
      • And that is after Dortmund unloaded Aubameyang and Dembele.
It is a crowded roster on a team that is 28 goals up, scored almost 3 goals per game while allowing only one per match. Far and away the most productive attack and only one goal allowed from being the stingiest defense in the Bundesliga.

    • Quick turnaround in the Bundesliga this week for midweek games. Look for Pulisic to start. Hannover has a must-win match against Freiburg and I expect him to get minutes, too.
