Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Carter-Vickers, Yedlin, and more

A busy period in the EFL Championship could see a lot of squads rotated with matches coming thick and fast. Swansea City however has stayed with U.S. Men’s National Team centerback Cameron Carter-Vickers this week, with the 20-year-old making his second start in four days on Saturday.

The Swans fought back from a two-goal first-half deficit to earn a point at the Liberty Stadium in a 2-2 draw against rivals Wigan Athletic on Saturday. Carter-Vickers made his 10th appearance of the season for Graham Potter, having a strong afternoon in the backline. His 10 clearances were the most by any player on either team, while he finished with a 91% passing completion rate.

After making five appearances from September to November, Carter-Vickers has made five through the month of December and could very well be keeping a starting role into the new year.

Elsewhere, DeAndre Yedlin helped Newcastle United hang onto a point at Watford while Tim Ream got the nod for Fulham in their home victory. Emerson Hyndman could not help Hibernian to a Edinburgh Derby result against Hearts. Duane Holmes made a short cameo in Derby County’s comeback win over Norwich City.

  1. Does anything cry out more, that we need soccer in the US to have more money, than a list like this.
What a bunch of pi55ing away of careers.
    .
The highlight being Yedlin hanging on for a point to lead his team to 18 total for the first half of the season!

    • “Yes promising young American talent never goes wasted or undeveloped in MLS.” Signed Tommy Thompson, Bradford Jamison, Andrew Carleton, Brandon Vazquez, Jordan Allen, Derrick Jones, Danilo Acosta and many more.

  2. Is Robinson another 4 to 6 weeks out or is that still from his injury from Nov camp which should out him just about back to training

    • He had surgery at the end of November on his ankle and that was expected to take 10 weeks, so I think it would be another 4-6 weeks from today.

  3. Should Duane Holmes get a March call-up? Played in 7 of last 9 matches for Derby, he has played mostly CM for Derby after playing as RM for Scunthorpe.

    • He has mostly played less than 20 minutes at the end of games to my recollection. At least Hyndman played regularly as a starter last season at Rangers and is starting to get more and more minutes at Hibernian since recovering from injury. I’d take him ahead of Holmes. I want to add my thanks, too, for the injury notations.

      • He’s had three starts, but you’re right he’s been used more as a sub, and it brings up the which league is better the Championship or Scotland. To be honest, I didn’t realize Holmes was playing inside this season when I posted the question, we have a need for RMs not sure about #8s.

As for Hyndman he still hasn’t been able to recreate his success with Rangers and he basically missed all of last season playing mostly with the Bournemouth U23s. Maybe I missed it or I forgot but he was injured during the last International window. Still, only one goal and no assists isn’t what you’d expect from him.
