Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Sargent, Williams, and more

Josh Sargent has been deserving of a chance to prove to the Werder Bremen coaching staff that he belongs with the first team. Friday saw Sargent come up with the goods for his team, scoring his first Bundesliga goal just a minute into his senior debut.

The 18-year-old U.S. Men’s National Team forward was in the right place at the right time, tapping home a loose ball to ice a 3-1 home victory for Werder Bremen. It was the team’s first victory since October 20th, but most importantly it should very well give Sargent another crack with the first team next weekend at Borussia Dortmund.

Elsewhere, Danny Williams earned his first league start for Huddersfield this campaign despite a 1-0 loss to Arsenal away from home. Tim Ream returned to Fulham’s starting XI but it was to no avail as the Londoners got demolished by Manchester United. DeAndre Yedlin was sent off for Newcastle in a home defeat, while Shaq Moore got the start in Reus Deportiu’s league win.

  1. No comments on Yedlin. A pretty bad mistake on his part and, after he lost the ball he got beaten for pace, forcing the foul. I thought it was a rather soft red, but he has only himself to blame. Hopefully he learned you can’t screw around with the ball, but have to have an outlet pass planned even before you receive the ball.

    • Absolutely brutal play by Yedlin. I thought the red may have been for denying a goal scoring opportunity, not so much for how bad the foul was. Was the Wolves guy in on a breakaway if Yedlin didn’t foul him?

      Reply
      • It looked like Yedlin was the last man, but the replay didn’t show a wide field of view. I didn’t have a problem with the red, but I think his coach would have liked to have had VAR available based on his motions on the sideline since it was mostly a shirt tug. Usually reds on breakaways are blatant fouls.

  2. Let’s see how Dortmund lines up for their CL match this week before we get too worried about Pulisic. He has been starting most of the CL matches so far. If he is on the bench at midweek I would be more concerned.

  3. TBH i dont think a permanent move a away is the answer to Pulisic’s current situation. I think a loan a move would do him a world of good.

He has the talent to play/start on any other bundesliga team. What he needs is consistent games to continue to develop.

Lets remember, this is only his second full season with the first team. No need to panic. He still has alot to offer BVB and they still rate him highly.

  4. Is not that Pulisic is playing badly, it’s just that he hasn’t improved over the last two years and it finally caught up with him. The “wonder boy” tag will only carry so far. At some point he had to start producing and he never did.
He’ll get another chance eventually but most likely in a lower ranked team.

Awesome week with a lot of US ?? influenced “activity” on the field (if you put things into perspective)

  6. Whoa. Obviously Sargent gets the headline, but Zelalem made the bench of a Premier League game?? That’s pretty big and didn’t see that coming. Good! Maybe with the spotlight off, he has been progressing.

    • I am concerned that the USMNT current best player cannot get on the field with his club. Over the years we have barked at the moon because MB90 wasn’t playing at his clubs, Jozy wasn’t playing, Clint Dempsey wasn’t playing, Donovan should be trying to play in Europe,
      etc. etc.

Are we in the for the same during this cycle with Pulisic on the bench behind a kid who is only on England’s U23 team?

      Reply
      • Sancho will never play another minute of U23 for the national team. He’s an England first team player and he is showing that he is better than Pulisic. Best hope is that Sancho gets poached by a bigger club instead of CP so that CP can stay and continue to develop. If CP goes to Chelsea, it will be a terrible move and this is coming from a Chelsea fan. I’m USA first

      • What was it, 10 days ago that he played 90 minutes in an important Champions League game? To say that “he can’t get on the field for his club” is an overreaction, and not all that accurate.
This is the deal. Dortmund this year is better than they’ve been the past few years, so the competition for playing time that CP is facing is stronger. A year ago, he was competing with Shurrle and Yarmelenko, this year he’s up against Sancho and Bruun Larsen. No doubt that Sancho’s ahead of him, that kid is good enough that Premier League teams will come calling soon. Bruun Larsen and CP look to me to be about equal, though. Bruun Larsen has 14 appearances while CP has 15. CP has also been dealing with some injuries that have cost him a few games.
I agree with Chicago Josh, let’s see what happens in the UCL this week. CP’s limited time this past weekend may have been all about keeping him fresh for the UCL.
