Report: Newcastle in talks with Atlanta United for Miguel Almiron

Atlanta United playmaker Miguel Almiron has been on the radar for several teams in the English Premier League. However, a new side has joined the mix and reportedly is close to making a deal for the Paraguayan’s services.

According to ESPN, Newcastle United has joined the race to sign the midfielder. The Magpies are seeking to sign Almiron on a loan deal with an option to buy him following the 2018-19 campaign.

Newcastle is set to pay the Five Stripes £15 million for Almiron, which will give the 25-year-old his first taste of European football.

Almiron has played a huge part in Atlanta United’s run to Saturday’s MLS Cup Final, scoring 11 goals and adding 13 assists in 36 regular season matches. He has also chipped in a goal this playoffs.

The Paraguayan international recorded nine goals and eight assists last season on his way to winning the 2017 MLS Newcomer of the Year Award, in Atlanta’s inaugural MLS campaign. He began his professional career with Cerro Porteno in his native country, before moving to Argentinian outfit Lanus in 2015.

No official deal has been confirmed yet between Newcastle and Atlanta but Almiron will look to play a big part in Saturday’s MLS Cup Final at Mercedes-Benz Stadium against the Portland Timbers.

  1. Maybe Atlanta fans will set me straight, but it looks right now that Atlanta overpaid for Barca. Getting $15 million for Almiron will help. How much of that will go to Atlanta and how much to the league? If Atlanta gets most of it, they can buy a couple of good players to lessen the loss of Almiron. Then, there is Martinez, too, of course. He could bring a big payday, too, but it might be too much to replace both Almiron and Martinez at the same time, no matter how much they get.

    • Basically, ATL would either get 750,000 of General Allocation money they could use to sign a couple of good players or they could use their cut of the proceeds after the original transfer cost and fees and MLS takes its 1/4 to buy a new DP. Dirty South estimated they’d have about 9 million to spend last year to replace him (which is more than you really need for a DP in MLS. Given that ATL has paid another year of salary and the current $ amount is significantly less than $25 million from last year that 9 million would be lower. They should have enough money from the sale of Almiron and Martinez to buy two good DPs to replace them, but will they be able to strike gold with two more young hungry DPs. As you said Barco has not lived up to billing and will they be able to attract young SA talent without Martino?

      • higher pay and more competitive international play could keep those who in the past would moved away to Europe. Creating Copa Sudamericana a “Washington & Hidalgo” division with Colombian teams, MLS, and Liga MX would help.

    • Almiron will walk right into that Newcastle team, they are extremely short on creative, game changer types so again I think he will be in the starting lineup within a month

    • Because it is how you get more young talent to sign with you. Why would Dembele sign with BvB a few years ago because he knew they’d play him and sell him when he got a good offer.

      • Exactly- and I would assume has been ATL’s sales pitch bringing in the young S.A. talent. It’s a hit to lose him however- having Almiron’s successful execution of this progression as an example makes it that much easier to pitch to practically limitless similar talent on the continent.
