Timothy Weah confirms loan move away from PSG

Timothy Weah has been linked with a move away from Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain and it looks like that is coming to fruition at the start of 2019.

Weah confirmed that he will leave PSG on-loan to gain more first-team experience. The 18-year-old broke into PSG’s first-team at the end of last season, but has failed to make the matchday squad since August.

After strong appearances in the International Champions Cup this summer and an impressive start to domestic play, Weah looked likely for more chances under Thomas Tuchel. However, with Kylian Mbappe, Edinson Cavani, and Neymar starring in attack, Weah has had to wait in the wings.

Goal reported that Scottish Premier League side Celtic look to be the favorites for the U.S. Men’s National Team forward’s services, but no official decision has been made.

Weah announced his decision via his Instagram, thanking PSG supporters for their support.

“I just want to take the time to talk to everyone about the decision my family and I made about going on loan this winter,” Weah wrote.

“First of all, I want to thank the fans for their constant support, as well as the coaching staff and my team-mates for making me feel part of the family. These few months were great even though I did not play much, I was always grateful for the opportunities I had at the beginning of the season because it opened many doors for me this winter.”

“I love you and I know you will go to the end and you will take the cup this year, God is with you all. I will miss the fans as well as the energy you bring to each game. I love you and God bless you. I hope that after these six months, I will be ready to return to the Parc des Princes and give everything to make you proud to be Parisian.”

Should Weah move to Celtic, he will be available for their Europa League Round of 32 tie against Valencia in February.

  1. Like most of the young US players, he needs to find ways to stay open and involved in the game even when it is not coming to him.
From afar, it is impossible to tell if he is lazy, scared, does not understand the importance of helping teammates , or just cannot anticipate plays well enough to be in an open position when he is needed the way he should.
But when the ball does find him, he has skill, pace and seems brave enough to take defenders on.
We will see if he has the soccer brain needed in the next couple seasons.
BTW, I could have said the same thing about Freddy Adu when he first popped on the scene; sadly Freddy never developed the soccer brain needed to anticipate the things he needed to do without the ball.

    • Sorry but…….. why on earth are we still using Adu analogies? I can not think of a single parallel between the two as people, players or their careers.

      • Of course no 2 people are directly comparable, but each of Weah and Adu excelled with US youth national teams, Both exhibited moments of brilliance, skill and some unique physical traits (quickness for Adu and size and speed for Weah).
Also both had long stretches in games where it was hard to tell they were in the game. It is this last trait that I was alluding to; we have all seen young players with talent who just never seem to figure it out as more and more is demanded of them. Adu is history and that is known, while how Weah will do involves predicting the future, a risky thing in the best of circumstances.
I wish Weah and all the youngsters well, but fret about them regaringf development ot that soccer mentality that finds them constantly open for teammates.

  2. The pro’s of this loan is he will get playing time on winning team
The con’s is there a need and minutes for him on a wining team?
PSG is becoming a buying team and not so much a promote and develop from within.

  3. Dude just needs to play.

He’s got immense aggression and pace and is DANGEROUS when he gets on the ball and drives at you. Love the way he runs the channels and Oh My can he separate.

I think he’s going to do extremely well with Berhalter. Berhalter’s big thing is building from the back, getting numbers advantages in the midfield, and breaking lines…and when you consider what he did with Gyasi Zardes – who does not have Weah’s raw pace or ability on the ball – if Weah can just get some regular minutes and get the green out of his game I think he’s going to be huge for the USA going forward.

Oh, I also think he’s a center forward and not a winger under Berhalter.
