2019 Copa America draw sees host Brazil land manageable group

The beginning of the road at the 2019 Copa America is a manageable one for Brazil. The same cannot be said for Uruguay.

The draw for this summer’s Copa America was held in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday evening, and tournament host Brazil will be the heavy favorite in Group A after being paired with Peru, Venezuela, and Bolivia.

Seeking their ninth South American title and first since 2007, the Brazilians open the competition by facing Bolivia at Estadio do Morumbi in Sao Paulo on June 14.

Uruguay had a tougher draw, landing alongside of Chile, Ecuador, and tournament invitee Japan in a fairly even Group C that many observers are already tabbing as the Group of Death. The Uruguayans’ first match is against Ecuador at Belo Horizonte’s Estadio Mineirao on June 16, and they close out the group stage vs. Chile eight days later at the famed Estadio do Maracana.

Group B, meanwhile, was headlined by Argentina. The Argentines drew Colombia, Paraguay, and the tournament’s other invitee in Qatar. Argentina opens its Copa America campaign on June 15 at Itaipava Arena Fonte Nova in Salvador against the Colombians, who will feature in another intriguing match-up against Colombia native and Paraguay head coach Juan Carlos Osorio in that same venue on June 23.

The 12-team tournament is set to run from June 14-July 7. The final will be played on the last day of the competition at the Maracana in Rio.

Here is a full rundown of the 2019 Copa America groups:

Group A: Brazil, Peru, Venezuela, Bolivia

Group B: Argentina, Colombia, Paraguay, Qatar

Group C: Uruguay, Chile, Ecuador, Japan

  1. Why do Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana play in the Caribbean Football Union of CONCACAF when those countries sit on the South American continent?

    • Competitive concerns…and none have the structure of their FA counterparts in CONMEBOL.

A lot of it goes back to not being independent until the 1960s. Long after the rest on CONMEBOL had established itself. FG still isn’t independent.

    • Weird indeed….. however, it would seem CONMEBOL’s options for guest teams were prettty limited here. CONCACAF teams and African teams will be tied up with the Gold Cup and AFCON, respectively…. and I don’t see them inviting a European team to the Copa America (would be very embarrassing if that team won). So Asia is pretty much the option. And given Qatar just knocked South Korea out of the Asian Cup today, perhaps they aren’t as terrible as in the past.

    • the implication that fishy things go on in Conmebol is the primary reason why MLS in Copa Lib will never happen, and, quit frankly, why Liga MX will never return. We are likely on our own. Let’s hope leagues in Concacaf not named MLS or Liga MX will up their game by about 4 or 6 notches. For CCL to be watchable, Liga MX and MLS would have to be rated as good as Portugal with 2 or 3 other leagues rated whatever position Liga MX is right now. It’s not watchable right now. Well, maybe the semi or final, but everything before not so much
