McKennie records game-winning assist in Schalke’s win over Wolfsburg

Weston McKennie marked Schalke’s return from the Bundesliga winter break with a game-winning assist in a 2-1 win over Wolfsburg.

The U.S. Men’s National Team midfielder darted from the left side of the field into open space to set up Daniel Caligiuri’s game-winning goal in the 78th minute.

McKennie, who came off in second-half stoppage time, played well out of the No. 10 position, as he produced a pair of key passes and won five aerial duels.

One minute before McKennie exited the field, Haji Wright came on as a late substitute for Schalke.

John Brooks started and played 90 minutes in defeat for Wolfsburg, who sits in sixth place in the Bundesliga after the loss.

Schalke’s win was its second in a row in league play, and it helped it keep pace with Werder Bremen and Mainz in its hunt to reach the top half of the table.

  1. With two promising US players, this could have been a good game for US viewers to watch. How unfortunate, then, that the Fox network chose not to broadcast it on standard cable or even to repeat it on delay a day later, but only featured Nürnberg–Hertha on FS1 instead. Yawn.

Also puzzling why the SBI TV schedule was apparently not tagged so that this week’s post would even show up in the TV category.

Good that McKennie did well. Hopefully Brooks did not do too badly, unlike Tim Ream, who apparently had a game to forget.

  2. Haji Wright missed a tap in in the final mins, but he is getting mins which is a positive. He has to put those easy ones in the net

    • McKennie & Adams solid CMs. Not flashy, but well rounded and have massive motors. Looking forwards to their development over the next couple years as they solidify the center of the USMNT.
Pulisic, Weah, and Sargent will hopefully bring the creativity and ruthless finishing the US has lacked for a long time.

The starting XI looks to be emerging for the USMNT….but there are still plenty of area’s we still need help. Especially at the second string positions.
