Neymar: Weah can be one of Europe’s top attackers

Timothy Weah may be heading out on loan from European giants Paris Saint-Germain but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t continued receiving support from his star teammates.

Brazilian star Neymar has backed the 18-year-old after his recent six-month loan move to Scottish Champions Celtic. Weah scored in PSG’s French Super Cup triumph over Monaco back in August, before netting his first Ligue 1 goal a week later. However, since then he has struggled to make Thomas Tuchel’s matchday squads with several international stars in the lineup.

“It is a very exciting move for Timothy, Neymar said. “From what I have seen of his talent, he has everything to go and become one of the top attacking players in Europe.”

“It is a good move for Timothy. Celtic too, as they are getting such a big talent, as well as PSG because Timothy has a chance to get experience and games before returning to us as a more complete player.”

After breaking onto the scene with the U.S. Men’s National Team, Weah struggled in front of goal to end 2018. In eight appearances, he was only able to muster one goal back in a 3-0 success over Bolivia last May. Still, his potential is something that has both PSG and USMNT fans alike excited for the future.

“Timothy has the talent, we already knew that, but also he also has a great attitude,” said Neymar. “From the first day that I met him, he has wanted to learn from the players who have already won the major trophies — the players here who have already achieved big things in the game.”

“Timothy is a fun guy to be around but he is also very humble and that is what you want to see from a younger player. It is what a coach wants to see as it means they want to learn.”

The son of former Ballon d’Or winner George Weah, Timothy is now expected to play a huge role for Celtic who are looking to repeat their domestic treble in Scotland. Despite heading into the winter break level on points with local rivals Rangers, Celtic has been able to find glory by season’s end.

With the team lacking strikers, Weah will aim to partner with fellow Frenchman Odsonne Eduard in Brendan Rodgers’ plans. Celtic returns to domestic play this weekend as they host Airdrieonians in the Scottish Cup.

“Timothy’s father was one of the greatest strikers ever but he does not feel the pressure of having the name — I respect that,” Neymar said. “He just has confidence in his own ability and in his own game, which is how I was at his age.”

  1. If he gets serious playing time for Celtic I will be impressed. I mean I have a lot of respect for Celtic. It was always kind of impossible to be at PSG. Good luck!

  2. Blah, blah, great potential, blah, blah, lots of speed. None of that matters, as we have seen in the past. Great attitude, humble, wanting to learn from great players, now that’s important. Perseverance, focus, hard work. He shows those qualities and then he can and will achieve.

      • Of course speed matters, but it’s not enough. Robbie Findley had a lot of speed. Marvell Wynne was probably the fastest American. Neither one had much of an impact on the international level. To play in a top tier you need athletic ability and no one in a Top 5 European league is going to be lacking in athletic ability. What sets one apart are the other things.

    Bullshit.
Celtic is a well run team full of veterans tha happens to be a the top of the table. I doubt an 18 year old with no first team experience is going to make much of a difference for them regardless of his name.
Y’all seriously need to get off these kids nuts and let them do their thing before anointing them the next USNT saviour. It’s not good for the players

    • Celtic also signed Bayo and has Edouard and Griffiths. I think it’s more of a developmental level loan. Americans look down on SPL but this is not a gimmee. It’s not Neymar and Mbappe but he will have to step up to get PT just the same.

    • It’s quite amusing that Lil’ Bobby can’t let a shred of positive coverage about an American player get by without trying to crap all over it. Pavlov would be tickled…

“Y’all seriously need to get off these kids nuts and let them do their thing before anointing them the next USNT saviour.” Hey guess what, Lil’ Bobby? It wasn’t the US media that made this pronouncement, it was Neymar, who is generally considered to be one of the best players in the world. SBI was simply relaying the message.

And yeah, we know that Neymar isn’t a professional scout and may be a tad biased as Weah’s teammate, But you keep doing you and policing the soccer world for any unwarranted positive news about American players. I hope you have some good meds on standby for when Pulisic scores his first goal at Chelsea…
