Rangnick: Adams will definitely be in squad against Dortmund

Tyler Adams may still be getting accustomed to his new home at RB Leipzig but the 19-year-old is expected to be tossed into the first-team squad this weekend.

The U.S. Men’s National Team midfielder will be in Leipzig’s 18-man squad for Saturday’s top-four showdown against Borussia Dortmund, Leipzig head coach Ralf Rangnick confirmed at Thursday’s press conference. Leipzig travel to the league leaders which could also see Adams’ fellow USMNT teammate Christian Pulisic on the pitch for Dortmund.

“Tyler has trained with us all week,” said Rangnick. “He had a few problems with his adductor after the weekend, but he’s taken part in every session and will definitely be in the squad.”

“Given that he’s only been here just over two weeks, we’re really happy with him so far. We knew that he’s a player who wouldn’t take long to settle in, but there’s still a difference between being with us for a few months and years or just a couple weeks.”

Adams made his Leipzig debut last weekend in their 1-1 friendly draw against Galatasaray. If Adams does get playing time he would follow several other USMNT players who have appeared in Germany’s top-flight this campaign.

“With all respect to the MLS and his development, there’s a difference between being one of the best – if not the best – midfielders in the MLS, and playing in the Bundesliga. So we’ll have to take things step by step, but he’ll definitely be in the squad on Saturday.”

Leipzig currently sits 11 points back of Dortmund in the league table.

  1. If MB is back in the mix after his performance in T&T FJ should be allowed in for his veteran experience at left back.
Left backs are in short supply. Tim Ream is another possible choice for the position. Either supply experience.
Chandler however is a different German altogether. Not as much need for a right back and question his desire to play for the USA side.

  2. Encouraging that he’ll be in the 18 so quickly after a mid-season transfer at a club that is still pushing for a top 4 finish. I’ll be surprised if he see the field this weekend (especially considering the statement of a minor injury), but it shows that the coach & club truly rate him. Give him a little time to build chemistry with his new teammates and become familiar with the style of play and he’ll hopefully be a regular in the starting XI by season end (just in time for the start of the Gold Cup).

Pulisic, Brooks, Adams, McKennie, Wood & Sargent is a nice spine to start building the USMNT team around for the future. We still have holes, and still need others to step up their game, but there are some decent options for Berhalter to evaluate and select from.

Here’s to a strong run to the end season for all the Americans Abroad….and hopefully a strong performance in this summers Gold Cup.

  3. Encouraging news. I hadn’t expected that he would make a match day squad so soon. We now have 4 midfielder and 3 strikers (who have all scored so far this season) in the Bundesliga. With Brooks, FJ, and Chandler, you almost have a complete team just from Bundesliga players. Doubt we have ever had so many national team players who play in a Top 5 league.
