Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Carter-Vickers, McKennie, and more

Cameron Carter-Vickers looks to have grabbed a starting spot with Swansea City after getting his fourth consecutive start on Saturday. The 21-year-old repayed manager Graham Potter as he helped the Swans to a 1-0 win over Millwall, with Carter-Vickers putting in a strong shift.

The U.S. Men’s National Team centerback finished with a 89% passing completion rate, while winning five duels and five headers. Carter-Vickers also completed six clearances and helped Swansea hold Millwall to three shots on goal. Potter’s men swept the season series from the London club and now sit in 11th place in the EFL Championship.

Carter-Vickers and Co. next face a tough test on Wednesday as they travel to Leeds United.

Elsewhere, Weston McKennie put in a strong shift while registering an assist despite Schalke’s road defeat to Bayern Munich. Duane Holmes was a lively performer in Derby County’s home win over Hull City, while Matt Miazga helped Reading to another clean sheet. Andrija Novakovich scored his fifth league goal of the season, Ethan Horvath got his first start in a Bruges Derby, and Emmanuel Sabbi retained his starting spot for Hobro in Danish Superliagen action.

  1. Richard Ledezma did not dress in PSV Eindhoven ’s 2-1 win over FC Jong on Friday*. This site never proof reads! Smh!Hyndman needs a move. Starting Ream as our LB, against Chile might be suicide.

    • I am not sure any left fullback available to the US is any better. Ream does lack speed and in the past he has fallen asleep from time-to-time, but he has some ball skills and generally positions himself well. Not sure any of the other choices are a big win, they may have more speed, but I am not comfortable with their defensive mentality or overjoyed with their 1v1 defending. LB is still a problem for the USA.

  2. McKennie looked much better and more comfortable in the deep-lying midfield role he had for the first 70 minutes of the game. He had a brilliant assist, did well to head a free kick on goal that was saved only by a lucky clearance by a Bayern defender when the keeper was beat. In the secontd half, he started deep and may a couple forays forward, one a spectacular dribble that a teammate should have finished off. His defensive responsibilities were handled routinely (no small feat against Bayern) and he was available for passes from teammates.

Like last week when he was pushed up to a forward position, he looked less comfortable and perhaps a bit unsure of what his job was other than to chase the Bayern defenders.

He looked like the player who will replace Bradley.

      • The real 6 or the hybrid RB/6 which leaves another midfield spot? I don’t see much of a future for Bradley, but with at least some of the Euro’s likely unavailable for the GC he may be needed through the Summer. Best case Parks, Durkin, and Canouse all shine in MLS this season and Bradley retires from the international game.

      • I thought McKennie looked most comfortable when he was a deep-lying midfielder, things were a bit fluid, but I think Schalke used 2 deep midifielders at least in the first half. He and Adams could do that, and I would expect that McKennie would be the one to join in the attack most often. With Bradley still in the mix, it gives some flexibility, stability and good coverage in case of injury.
GB will have to make a decision about which pair to use (and how to use them), but that might depend upon other dynamics in the team, not just on who is better at something in midfield.
