Report: Joe Corona considering move to MLS

Joe Corona has spent his entire professional career in Mexico but the U.S. Men’s National Team midfielder is considering a move to Major League Soccer.

According to Goal, the 28-year-old has expressed interest in moving to MLS as he continues his final year of his current contract with Club Tijuana. Corona recently lifted the Liga MX title on-loan with Club America and has been limited to appearances so far in the Clausura off the bench.

Despite being a part of a talented Club America squad last year, Corona made 31 appearances in all competitions.

Should an MLS side come calling, they will need to acquire his rights from the LA Galaxy, according to the report. He was last linked to the Galaxy following the 2016 MLS season however the move never materialized.

Corona has amassed 220 Liga MX appearances in his career between his time at Xolos, Veracruz, and Club America. He also lifted a Liga Ascenso title at Dorados de Sinaloa.

Corona has won 23 caps with the USMNT, with the last coming in May 2018 in a friendly win over Bolivia. He lifted two Concacaf Gold Cup titles in 2013 and 2017.

  1. He’s had a pretty amazing career so far, and would hate to see him switch gears in the prime of his career but yeah, if he’s not starting then he’s got to find a new home.

  2. There are only a handful of teams with the money to 1. Buy that slot from the Gals 2. With the Tam/Gam to afford his wages.

  3. This could be a good move for him if he actually gets to the right team. He’s a creative player with a little bit of bite, so would fit with a number of clubs who try to build through the midfield, but if he lands at a side that bypasses the midfield he’d be wasted.

He’s young enough to give a club ~3 years of good service so could see a few clubs being interested. May not be a superstar signing, but would be a good cog at the right price.

  4. Some years ago I was reading about him. He grew up in Tijuana and Chula Vista in San Diego County., graduated high school in Chula Vista. He had hoped to get an offer from an MLS side out of high school or college after he played a year at San Diego State. Never got an offer, but got one from Tijuana Xolos while they were still in the second division. He has probably made more money in Mexico than he would have in MLS, but it was originally his preferred destination, so this is not a surprise. However, his position is one where the Galaxy are overstocked. They will probably trade their rights to him.

    • He’ll find a home pretty durn quick. True #10’s are a rare breed and he can do that job, maybe not against world-class competition on the International level, but he’d be a heckuva pickup for most MLS squads.

      • Whenever I saw him in Liga MX I liked the way he played. He was a real spark plug, running at defenders, pressing opponents when they had the ball and making a real nuisance of himself. He’s a real high energy type guy who should do well with the right team that plays his style.
