Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Green, Novakovich, and more

Julian Green returned to domestic play for Greuther Furth on Sunday and did so with a bang.

The 23-year-old forward scored his third goal of the season as Furth held on for a 2-2 draw at home. Green’s finish came in the opening minute and was one of the better strikes in his career. Green lined up a shot and rattled it off the right post and in from long-range to give Furth an early lead.

Despite holding a 2-0 halftime lead, Furth would have to settle for a point at Trolli Arena as Arminia Bielefeld scored twice in the final 45 minutes. Green finished with a 88% passing completion rate, he won five duels, and had two shots on goal in total.

Elsewhere, Duane Holmes had a strong performance for Derby County in their rout of Rotherham United. Tyler Adams picked up an assist in RB Leipzig’s trouncing of Hertha Berlin. Andrija Novakovich was also amongst the goals for Fortuna Sittard, Christian Cappis made his senior debut for Hobro in league play, and Andrew Wooten’s late game-winning goal helped Sandhausen away from home.

Matt Miazga, Eric Lichaj, Antonee Robinson, and Cameron Carter-Vickers all went 90 minutes in the EFL Championship. Lynden Gooch was a second-half substitute for Sunderland despite their loss to Portsmouth in the Football League Trophy Final at Wembley. John Brooks played 90 minutes but could not help Wolfsburg shut down Borussia Dortmund in a 2-0 loss.

    • Here’s my question though, if he has this skill in his arsenal why does he only have 7 goals in 2 1/2 seasons in the 2.Bundesliga? It makes you think this kind of shot is really the exception, not the rule.

  1. Tyler Adams right now might be the best young US player. He made some absolutely killer passes Saturday. And I don’t care what Berhalter’s strategy might be. I think Adams should be in the middle of the play and orchestrating our attack.

      • Not the same position Johnny and you are clearly smart enough to know that. Berhalter acknowledged that it’s not in his comments on the subject. Adams is for sure the best player we have to fit that role in Berhalter’s system, but is Adams in that role maximizing his ability and what is best for the team? I’m not convinced it is, but we’ll see. Unfortunately- we burned an entire year that could have been used to answer questions like this.

      • Come on Johnny, this is disingenuous. He was not in the middle of the field when the team was defending. He’s an incredibly disruptive force defensively for Leipzig playing in midfield. Much of his value in the midfield is not utilized when he is defending as a right back. Pretty sure that assist from Saturday doesn’t happen in the USMNT because he would’ve been out right and not in a position to receive the pass from Kempl or whoever it was.

      • Shaggy, yes he wouldn’t have been on the far left, that is someone else’s position in the 3-2-2-3, had the turnover been on the right he would have made the same play. He couldn’t have made the play two weeks ago when Kampl was playing the double 6 either. RBL wants to counter, the US wants to have possession. Berhalter wants to push Adams higher to force turnovers in our end RBL wants to let the ball into their half and play long balls into space. Two strategies doesn’t mean Adams can’t play both just because you saw him play one on Saturday. This repeated whining about how he’s a “RB” is disingenuous, as if he’s Graham Zusi, never getting more than 30 yards upfield or Yedlin playing all the way out on the touchline.

    • Totally Agree Gary. We are getting blessed with a golden generation in CM right now. We need to build around that talent instead of shuffling the lineup around to work in MLS players.

Again any objective outside(non US based) manager would realize the talent we have and utilize it but so much of our decision making on call ups and who starts where seems to be geared to giving MLS players every opportunity possible and criticizing a European based player the first time they make a mistake, and that last part is not hyperbole they ran out multiple articles on several soccer sites on why Yedlin shouldn’t start. It boggles the mind really. We have talent everywhere except in the USSF office and at NT manager, and LB of course.

    • Green has 6 goals and 2 assist in 3600 min.over two seasons with Gruether. Fafa Picault had 4 goals and 2 assists in 800 minutes for St. Pauli over two seasons. Green has not been good since being forced out at Bayern, he’s had similar numbers with far more playing time than a pretty average MLS player.

      Reply
    • I don’t see it. He is certainly skilled, pulls out an occasional spectacular play, but disappears for long stretches is easily pushed off the ball, coughs it up a lot, is a liability on defense.

      Reply
    • Why should we be giving Green a chance, or even a callup, when we have standouts like Baird and Arriola??? Green (23 yr old) is actually the same age as Baird- but clearly Bundesliga II experience as an attacking player is not comparable to one season in MLS on a mediocre team.

      Reply
      • Danny- Not a bad point. However, Green has played winger three times since Sept. 2017. So really you have to say he’s behind Pulisic as a #10 obviously, so is he better than Lletget. Lletget has similarly looked better for the USMNT than his club so I think it is a discussion but he’s hardly a lock.

    • I have always been a Green supporter for those who know me here. He has very good touch and control of the ball. Green’s primary problem over the years has been he’s not fast enough or good enough at crossing the ball to be a true winger and he’s not big enough to play as a lone target striker.

His true talent is at finishing and scoring first touch goals that get served to him. He is excellent at this. At Freuth he’s been played a lot at ACM or again on the wing. As for him at ACM I said over a year back he’s never really played this role before and has to completely relearn his position if thats where they see him.

I don’t see him as an ACM btw. I’ve always thought he works best as a withdraw striker or false 9 playing alongside a bigger striker that is his true position and where his talent is maximized. ACM was an experiment but not really going his way IMO. Also as a smallerish player now 23 he will start to bulk a little thru his mid 20s so he could turn into a late bloomer.

I do see him as a better bench option than LLegett or Baird though. And he has good stats when he wears the Shirt too.

      Reply
      • His best quality is what he showed on the goal over the weekend, he’s not afraid to shoot. You are right as the players around him have grown physically he has lost the edge he had in the youth ranks. He’s not fast enough to go by top-level players or strong enough to play through them. I’m sure he’s better than Baird, not sure on Lletget.

      • Johnny. Just to clarify. Green was never the bigger faster kid who relied on speed or strength or size who then was found out once the rest of the kids caught up to him to physically. That was NOT Green. He was always small and never fast.

His skill and why he came up thru the Bayern system and what they saw in him was his touch and skill on the ball. His control of the ball is excellent and he’s a very good finisher in front of goal. But when he never developed physically Bayern moved on.

His touch and finishing are still there and imo still ahead of a lot of players getting more starts and caps than him. He could be very useful as a last 15 sub down a goal. He just needs that one chance on a strike. If he gets service he could be deadly in the system that uses him as a false 9. But alas he keeps moving from wing to ACM and back wasting his true talent.

  2. Green’s goal was in the 10th minute.
fantastic strike! but i’m not sure why it wasn’t ruled an own goal.

also: American Ian McGrath started for Queen of the South in that same match Harkes played in.
