Almiron out for remainder of season with hamstring injury

Miguel Almiron’s season with Newcastle United is over.

The club confirmed on Wednesday that Almiron will miss the team’s final three matches this season. Almiron suffered a hamstring injury last weekend against Southampton.

Almiron, 25, is also in doubt for this summer’s Copa America for Paraguay, whom Newcastle have been in contact with regarding the injury. He made 10 league appearances for the Magpies, totaling 763 minutes under Rafa Benitez.

The playmaker joined for £20 from Atlanta United in January, after helping lead the Five Stripes to their first-ever MLS Cup. Almiron scored 22 goals and added 19 assists in 68 career MLS appearances for Atlanta.

Newcastle guaranteed Premier League safety with their 3-1 win over the Saints last Saturday. They travel to Brighton & Hove Albion this weekend, before concluding their season with matches against Liverpool and Fulham.

  1. Bless his heart. He was so energetic, so positive, so hopeful of scoring his first EPL goal, and so downcast when he got hurt. ¡Fuerza, Miguel, no te des por vencido!

He was so good with Atlanta, and so brave to jump in at the deep end with Newcastle and run his heart out, with all the thugs in the Premier League looking to work him over as soon as he set foot on the field. I hope both he and Yedlin will hang in there, despite adversity, and be fresh and tough in the fall. And that Rafa Benítez will still be there — or if not him, maybe Bielsa?

Younger players from smaller countries are exactly who can help improve MLS while also using it as a stepping stone. The more visibility players like him can keep bringing the league, the better.

    • We don’t want MLS as a stepping stone that is for lower level European teams. We need to get the money in MLS to where he doesn’t have to waste his time at Newcastle. They don’t need him their season has been done for a while now. missing the last three games does nothing and he has already proven himself worth of moving on.
