Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Wright, Booth and more

Haji Wright had the game of his season so far for Schalke’s U-23 side on Saturday. The 21-year-old striker netted a hat trick as Schalke routed Erndtebruck 7-0 at home.

The U.S. U-23 Men’s National Team striker scored all three of his goals in a 30 minute span as Schalke ran off with all three points. In 16 league appearances this campaign, Wright now has eight goals and four assists for Schalke’s U-23 side as he continues his professional development.

With Schalke currently battling in a relegation fight in the Bundesliga, Wright has been able to make the most of his time with the U-23’s which could also see him called into Jason Kreis’ squad later this year internationally.

Elsewhere, Taylor Booth scored his first goal for Bayern Munich’s U-19 side while Alex Mendez also saw the pitch for Freiburg. Antonee Robinson and Wigan held Norwich City to a 1-1 draw at home, Eric Lichaj and Hull City could not defeat Middlesbrough, and Matt Miazga and Reading continued a rise in the league after defeating Brentford. Andrija Novakovich and Andrew Wooten also found the back of the net for their respective clubs.

  1. My latest 23 for the GC (Who I think Berhalter brings)
    GK: Steffan, Horvath, Guzan
Def: Brooks, Long, Miazga, Zimmerman, Yedlin, Ream, FJ
C Mid: Adams, McKennie, Pulisic, Bradley, Trapp, Lletget, Saief,
    Wings: Arriola, Weah,
    For: Altidore, Zardes, Sargent, Nova
    —————————————————
Just missed: CCV, EPB, Roldan, Morris, Corona, Mihailovic, Green
Three of these guys are currently injured plus Sargent and Weah are U20 eligible so this lineup could change dramatically.
    —————————————————-
Guys it would be fun to see: Holmes, Tyler Boyd, Wooten, Gall
    —————————————————-
    I’m sure I missed someone.

    • I like your choices. The only change I would make is to find room for Green. When he has played lately for the Nats he has looked very good on the ball and he’s still young. He has creativity that some of our other players are lacking. If I had to take someone out for him, I guess it would be either Arriola or Weah

      • Berhalter did mention to ESPN he likes the idea of CP switching in and out to change the look for the defense. Green with his experience as a wing and #10 who plays on the left side would seem a candidate to play that interchange. He hasn’t had a very good season and wasn’t called in over Jonathan Lewis who would have been eligible to play for the U23s in Spain in March. If you played a line with Green-Pulisic-McKennie-Holmes you could all four switching positions and sides and really tax a defense. I feel like Green for Nova is the most likely, although if he keeps scoring how do you add an ineffective Green in a weaker league for an in form striker who can’t stop scoring.

      • Thanks for the update Johnny. I wish he could hurry up and Bloom fast to make the bench for the first team. CJ and Steffan in comp for number 1 would be hella awesome.

  2. just a note- Ledezma and PSV Eindhoven’s u19s played in the u19 Eredivisie on Saturday.
as opposed to Jong PSV- which played in the Eerste on Friday.
Ledezma hasn’t featured yet for the Eerste squad.

    • And they played Dest and Ajax U19s on Saturday so it is unlikely Dest will play for Jong Ajax Monday. Dest has been back with the U19s the last couple weeks, hopefully, to prepare Jong Ajax for his upcoming departure for the WC.

      Reply
      • that’s a good point about the u20 WC. i initially thought Dest’s return to the u19s was specifically for UEFA Youth League and i was a little surprised to see him stay with them after they got knocked out, but the u20 WC could explain it.

  3. Has anyone seen Tyler Boyd play? He has 4 goals and 4 assists since joining Ankaragucu in the Turkish Super League on loan in January from Portuguese club Guimaeres. His mother is American and he lived in California as a child. He has apparently turned down some offers from the New Zealand NT for cap-tying events, played in some friendlies in 2014.

    • i’ve caught a couple of Ankaragucu’s matches since he got there. (beIN shows some Super Lig matches) Boyd’s really impressed me. I’d love to see him get a US call-up, and he’s expressed interest in receiving one.

      • He looks the part, but it is hard to tell from youtube videos. Given that we lack for true wingers, if he can score in Turkey and Portugal he’s probably as good as MLS level wingers and converted strikers we’ve been trying to use.
