Bruce Arena and Landon Donovan will make their Gold Cup debuts in broadcasting this summer.

Fox Sports announced on Friday that Arena and Donovan will be studio analysts for the channel’s coverage of the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup.

“This summer’s Concacaf Gold Cup is poised to deliver action, excitement and drama,” said Fox executive producer David Neal said. “John and Stu were exceptional at the 2018 World Cup™, so we are thrilled to have them lead our Gold Cup roster. We also look forward to having Landon Donovan back on our broadcast and welcome Bruce Arena to the FOX Sports family.

Arena, a National Soccer Hall of Famer, managed the U.S. Men’s National Team from 1998-2006 and 2016-17. His lengthy career also saw stops with D.C. United, New York Red Bulls, and LA Galaxy. He led the USMNT to three Gold Cup titles in 2002, 2005, and 2017.

Donovan won 157 caps with the USMNT from 2000-14, scoring 57 goals and winning four Gold Cup titles. He currently is with the San Diego Sockers of the MASL.

The USMNT, led by new head coach Gregg Berhalter, will kick off their Gold Cup schedule on June 18th against Guyana.

  1. The usual self loathing trying to be disguised as greatness.
The realization that these players\coaches are one billion times better than you, representing you and they aren’t Messi.
    .
    Pathetic
    .
    Absolutely pathetic
    .
The next step. Oh we found something better. First Dempsey. Nope? Ok guys that haven’t done much yet…But they will, then I will be great.
    .
Wrong they are still a billion times better than you…and if you are whining about them and previous…… a billion time better than you deserve.

  2. I get the hate about Bruce, but what has Donovan done to get this kind of shade? I mean, he’s not a great commentator, barely average, but I don’t get why people at e trashing his career. He literally had nothing to do with the failed WC 2018 qualification and was kept off the 2014 squad, so this rabid hate is odd…

  3. I used to have tons of respect for Arena after the 2002 World Cup and the work he did for the LA Galaxy, Beckham and co., but that night in T&T totally ruined Arena’s legacy and credibility. Arena’s stubbornness and over-conservativeness relying on & mistrusting over the hill veterans such as Omar Gonzalez (benching the much better & reliable Geoff Cameron), Tim Howard (Howard’s positioning could have done much better with the first T&T’s rocket goal from 40 yards out and Gonzalez’s own goal), etc…The majority of the USMNT roster was primarily old men, in soccer terms. Playing on the road under hot and humid weather, those old legs simply turn into concrete, especially the same lineup played against Panama just 4 days prior to traveling to T&T. In modern soccer, a competitive national team needs a good balance of youth, speed, skills, experience & wit to go against the elite soccer power of the world. We were playing a young B-team from T&T.

    USA: 1-Tim Howard, 2-DeAndre Yedlin, 3-Omar Gonzalez, 5-Matt Besler, 15-Jorge Villafaña (23-Kellyn Acosta, 72), 4-Michael Bradley (capt.), 21-Paul Arriola (8-Clint Dempsey, 46), 10-Christian Pulisic, 6-Darlington Nagbe (16-Benny Feilhaber, 84), 9-Bobby Wood, 17-Jozy Altidore
    Subs not used: 12-Brad Guzan, 22-Nick Rimando, 7-DaMarcus Beasley, 11-Alejandro Bedoya, 13-Dax McCarty, 14-Tim Ream, 18-Chris Wondolowski, 19-Graham Zusi, 20-Geoff Cameron

I will go to the grave blaming Bruce Arena’s stupid decisions, not the players for the disastrous failure on Tuesday, October 10, 2017.

    • Doesnt matter. It happened – players and coachs fault. PS didnt just happen in Trinidad. That CR game at Red Bull Arena, they could have clinched then too was just as bad. People forget that, I dont, bc i was there and got dogged by CR fans.

Also, Cameron was never a reliable CB. Also good for one space head play a game. Liked him better at CDM.

  5. Respect both of their careers and what they gave the usmnt but they are washed up and need to move on. There is a new and better generation forming with these young guys so lets let them pave their own way without these good old boy commentators ruining our watching experiences

    • Guess we need to wait another 15-20 years before Pulisic, McKennie, Weah, Mendez, et. al. provides us with deft analysis and uncanny link up play in the commentary box.

      • These kids have already have surpassed LD if what it takes to make it in another league is what matters to you.

  6. Seeing Bruce Arena just made me throw up a little in my mouth. So we have the Godfather of the old boys network, along with their golden boy Donovan. If we were a serious soccer nation, Arena would retreat into obscurity. At this point, I could care less about the Gold Cup. Just wake me up for the semi-finals and then I’ll watch. And if the US can’t even make it that far… the NATs program should not be worthy of our attention as soccer fans until they can prove they are one of the top 3 or 4 teams in Concacaf or until they fire this whole crew.

      • And I for one live Taylor’s commentary. Largely because when he works a shift I always feel like what’s happening on the field (especially th usmnt) really matters to him. I would rather have at least one more passionate commentator coupled with another who is more even keeled. My only problem with the Arena/Donovan team is that they are too similar in commentary style. Both knowledgeable. But I want at least one person who shares my fanaticism when the US plays-even at the gold cup.

    • Hit the nail on the head. These 2 are going to suck all the energy out of the fan base. Arena for his part in the disaster that was the Hex, and Donovan trying to put the spotlight on himself.
They should have gotten Dempsey. At least he wouldn’t be a Suck-Up, and provide some real insight and possibly poise some hard questions of the Coach/USSF.
Maybe Dolo or Boca could provide level headed input.
