Hamlett calls reports claiming Henry to coach Red Bulls “false”

Former New York Red Bulls forward Thierry Henry has been linked by European outlets to be the club’s next head coach. However, Red Bulls sporting director Denis Hamlett isn’t having any of it.

Hamlett released a statement on Monday afternoon confirming that reports with Henry being linked to the club are false.

“Recent reports of Thierry Henry joining the New York Red Bulls are false,” Hamlett said.

The Red Bulls have struggled in 2019, only winning once in league play while currently sitting in 10th place in the Eastern Conference.

Henry was sacked as manager of Monaco back in January after only winning four matches out of a possible 20. Prior to that, he served as an assistant with the Belgian National Team.

The former French star played four seasons with the Red Bulls, scoring 51 goals and helping the club to one Supporters Shield.

New York faces off with FC Cincinnati this weekend, aiming for their second league win.

  1. For those who said Henry would be a disaster based on what happened at Monaco, look no further than Bob Bradley and how things went at Swansea before his success at LAFC. Anytime you bring in a coach mid-season, it’s because the team is struggling. Monaco brought back the previous coach after Henry, and they still suck… Not saying Henry would become SAF, but I think he would do fine in MLS.

    • Misleading. Bradley was final four at Princeton. Arena apprentice on those winning teams. Goes to Chicago and wins a title with an expansion team. Goes to Chivas and gets them in the playoffs. Goes to the US and takes it to the knockouts. Almost gets Egypt in the world cup during their era of violent protests and regime change. Skip one, does what he has with expansion LAFC. The only blip in there was Swansea, where he was brought in after the season started, wasn’t able to pick his own players, and walked into a situation where they were chauvinistically upset with the new American owner and new American coach. Given his resume, that’s an outlier. Compared to that, it’s possible Henry finds his feet but he doesn’t have the same resume. He needs to go someplace easier and establish his bona fides. His first adult player head coach job shouldn’t have been Monaco.

  2. could mean the whole thing was an agent-driven publicity campaign. offer straw men to see if other real opportunities get interested. eg, Moyes and USMNT/MLS when out of work. also could mean they sounded him out but couldn’t reach terms. at which point you deny the end result, “rumors he is joining the team are false.” but rumors of interest would conversely be true.
