Report: David Wagner to become Schalke manager

David Wagner is set to return to Germany.

According to BBC Sport, the German-American is reportedly set to become the next manager of Bundesliga side Schalke.

Wagner, 47, last served as manager of England’s Huddersfield Town from 2015 to January 2019. He helped the club earn promotion into the Premier League heading into the 2017-18 season, but mutually parted ways with the club this past January with the club sitting bottom of the league.

Wagner played for Schalke from 1995-97, making 29 appearances for the club and scoring two goals. He also served as head coach of Borussia Dortmund II, during Jurgen Klopp’s time as first-team manager.

Schalke eased their relegation worries with a 4-2 Rivierderby win over Borussia Dortmund last weekend.

The Gelsenkirchen side are six points from the relegation playoff with three matches remaining. Schalke hosts Augsburg this Sunday at home.

  1. Glad that he has landed on his feet in a better position than I might have suspected. The last few months at Huddersfield were really bad and that could have been a show stopper for 1st division positions. That was too bad after a couple of great seasons in England.

With Pulisic leaving Dortmund for Chelsea, I think Schalke will be the Bundesliga club I follow next season.

    • That is a very simplistic viewof his career. He was a very successful managtr in Germany before going to England, and he got Huttersfield to the Premier Leagie to begin with. I dont think any manager anywhere could have had different results given the lack of resources Wagner had at his disposal as a Premier League Manager.

    • Once in the EPL, Huddersfield won 12 games in 2 years, and just 2 under him this season before he was canned. I am at a loss how this is a showing that gets you a national job.

      • At the club level in Europe if the ownership doesn’t invest in players there is little hope of the club staying in the top division. Doesn’t matter how good a coach you are if your team lacks the talent to compete.
In 2 years (2015 to 2017) Wagner was able to get Huddersfield promoted to the EPL.
Kept Huddersfield in the EPL without any real investment in players.
        Parted ways in 2019

Anyone who can get a team promoted to the EPL and keep them in the top league on a shoestring budget has more ability as a coach than any coach in the history of USSF/USMNT. Bradley couldn’t even last a season in the EPL, Arena has never coached outside the US. Berhalter only lasted 2 season in Sweden.

Wagner would have been an excellent option as our National Team coach.

      • He resigned and did not get ‘canned’. You should grow up and get a job.
Wagner was an amazing manager to have gotten so much from so little.

      • Look at Fulham this year, they made a substantially larger investment in players than Huddersfield and couldn’t stay up. Bruce Arena proved having a good winning percentage in club play doesn’t mean you can manage a national team.

      • “Bruce Arena proved having a good winning percentage in club play doesn’t mean you can manage a national team.” So…. we’re gonna basically agree to delete 2002 at this point, yes?

      • let me rephrase. your only resume is with one team who when you made it to the big league you got clobbered. arena has a lengthy history with national teams, college, pro championships. bradley has coached us, egypt, etc. wagner’s claim to fame is getting a team promoted that went back down in 2 years. he was mediocre at dortmund also. there is literally nothing on the resume to make him stand out other than the snob value of where he was. if i want my team to win, i go hire a winner, not someone to nitpick the resume of better coaches. come back when you have a winning first division team to talk about.

      • i mean, where i come from i am looking for coaches who win repeatedly at high levels (tata) and players who produce at high levels. the USSF and its fandom seem to be being taken over by club snobs who care more “where” you were than “if” you did anything there. my goal is the sir alex ferguson coach who wins practically everywhere he goes, be it aberdeen or manU. we instead are now doing the “value for money” berhalter thing — bypassing more winning coaches — and now we’re going to talk up someone who lost more than they won with the talent on Dortmund II, got promoted by playoff, and then was back down in 2 years with 2 wins his last season. other than a single 3rd place playoff he has basically won nada in several years as a head coach.

  2. Yes more playimg times for Haji Wright. Hopefully his form can stay consistant and good and he can crack the first team bench.
