Adams, McKennie, Pulisic headline USMNT provisional Gold Cup roster

Gregg Berhalter’s 40-player provisional roster for the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup has been announced.

Concacaf announced the rosters on Monday for all 16 teams that will participate in the tournament.

Headlining the the U.S. Men’s National Team roster is the Bundesliga trio of Tyler Adams, Christian Pulisic, and Weston McKennie. All three players are coming off strong domestic campaigns abroad and will look to lead the USMNT to glory this summer.

Also among the selections are veterans Jozy Altidore, Omar Gonzalez, Michael Bradley, and Brad Guzan.

Berhalter also brought in some younger talent with Duane Holmes, Joe Gyau, Jonathan Amon, and Josh Sargent making the cut. Tyler Boyd has also been included in the provisional roster after recently making a one-time switch from New Zealand to represent the USMNT.

Three notable omissions from the roster were defenders DeAndre Yedlin and John Brooks as well as forward Andrew Wooten. Yedlin and Brooks dealt with injuries abroad at the end of the season while Wooten scored 17 goals for Sandhausen in Germany.

A training camp roster is expected to be released later this week for upcoming friendlies against Jamaica and Venezuela on June 5th and 9th respectively. In between those friendlies, a final 23-man roster will be submitted by Berhalter to Concacaf for the Gold Cup.

Here’s the entire 40-player USMNT roster:

Goalkeepers: Zack Steffen, Ethan Horvath, Sean Johnson, Brad Guzan, Tyler Miller.

Defenders: Cameron Carter-Vickers, Marlon Fossey, Miles Robinson, Matt Miazga, Reggie Cannon, Greg Garza, Antonee Robinson, Andrew Gutman, Nick Lima, Aaron Long, Daniel Lovitz, Tim Ream, Omar Gonzalez, Walker Zimmerman.

Midfielders: Tyler Adams, Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, Michael Bradley, Wil Trapp, Duane Holmes, Sebastian Lletget, Djordje Mihailovic, Darlington Nagbe, Cristian Roldan.

Forwards: Jozy Altidore, Paul Arriola, Corey Baird, Tyler Boyd, Joe Gyau, Gyasi Zardes, Jonathan Lewis, Jordan Morris, Christian Ramirez, Josh Sargent.

  1. Minutes played in the Bundesliga this season according to TransferMkt:

    Brooks – 2610
    McKennie – 1746
    Morales – 1525
    FJ – 1019
    Pulisic – 926
    Adams – 721 (since Jan)
    Sargent – 205 (since turning 18)

We are in no position talent wise to ignore players playing substansial minutes in a top 5 league. I’m a broken record on this one but club level matters so we can’t ignore FJ and Morales. Unless they’re injured they have a place somewhere on this roster even if its a backup. Its not like we’re so deep like a Brazil or Argentina where we can ignore these players because we have a plethora of other players across top leagues.

    • Left out Wood at 1181′. And yes I know he and Brooks are injured. Was referring to the FJ and Morales not being called.

  2. Hmmm. Starting to not like the choice of GB as leader, and this is only the 40 man provisional roster.
GB did a great job of taking less talent a long ways. We are looking at some pretty good talent, especially in midfield needing to go a long ways. Can he do it ?
    .
This has Trapp and Bradley anchoring a midfield written all over it, with GB playing Adams at right back. Hopefully GB will have the common sense to fill in a guy that should be a great bench player but CAN step up as a starter, CRoldan, but he probably will play someone else, they won’t step up and it will be mediocre. The D looks mediocre and is ZStephan even playing ?
Forward. Maybe they just want to keep Morris happy? He is injured again, third time in three years. He has had moments and does have speed, but other than that his pro career was a great rookie year followed by frustration.

  3. Let’s remember not all of these guys will be in camp, supposedly the camp roster will be out later this week. At that time I’d expect 3G to give some interviews about the selections, and some things may become more clear. I think maybe 30 for camp at the most obviously not 5 keepers. The 23 man roster we get I think will look like this:
    ——————————————————-
    GK:Steffan, Horvath, Johnson
    RB:Adams, Lima
    LB:Ream, ARobinson, Lovitz
    CB: Long, Zimmerman, Miazga
    DM: Bradley, Trapp
    CM: McKinnie, Nagbe
    AM: Pulisic, Lletget
    CF:Altidore, Zardes, Sargent
    W: Boyd, Arriola, Morris
    —————————————————–
Final Cuts: Holmes (recovering from recent injury not great form in playoffs, might need some rest to prepare for EPL if they win next week), Roldan (Nagbe better ability to unlock bunkering teams), CCV (if there will be U23 matches this Summer, could replace Zimmerman, I think Ream makes because he will play LB in 3 Man), OG(does 3G want a veteran CB?) Amon (Arriola played well last time, Amon might have more upside but if you go back to Arriola at 19 wouldn’t you have said the same thing about Paul, Arriola can play both sides can Amon maybe I really don’t know, I’d pick Amon but I don’t get to pick)
Others in camp: Cannon, Miller, Mihailovic, Gyau
    —————————————————–
Berhalter doesn’t look at his roster as let me pick the 23 best US players. He seems to look for 11 guys that fit his system and then picks the rest of the guys on where they can fit in and help the team. We think in terms of who are 23 guys that can start, he doesn’t. Lovitz probably shouldn’t start against Mexico, but up a goal with 15 minutes to play do you want him on the LWM instead of Arriola to kill the game? The same with a Lewis, he’s not going to give you 90 minutes but if you need a goal in the last 10 minutes and the RB has tired legs he can cause havoc and open up spaces.
    ——————————————————-
In a recent interview Berhalter said his staff are watching all the games of the players in the pool and having discussions as a staff and with the players, this isn’t going to be a tryout camp this is who has been able to make the adjustments they’ve discussed to improve there spot.

    • Johnny, I appreciate your logic and I agree that he’s putting the best players that he feels fits his system. Understanding that, your 23 makes a lot of sense, and will probably be close you what we see.

The only thing i disagree with are the GKs. I prefer the 3 you chose, but I have a gut feeling Guzan will be there. It’s just the experience factor that we’ve heard touted before and i don’t think 3G is immune to it. Though to be honest, is it necessary? Horvath has been playing in the Champions and Europa leagues, and has experience in high pressure environments. Steffen has only been in MLS playoffs, but did spend time in Europe before and will be heading to City soon. Just watching him the friendlies and the way he handles himself, I think he’ll be fine. Therefore Guzan gives you nothing as a third GK.

      • Guzan has looked very old lately. Practically looked like he was fighting arthritis on the winning goal NYRB scored over the weekend. I think the time is probably ripe to move on.

    • While I have some quibbles with some of your selections I really have a problem with Johnson, even as the 3rd GK. Every so often he will have a brain cramp or something and have a real howler. Re Guzan I still remember how he got the starter job with Aston Villa by having a couple of games where he was outstanding in stopping penalty kicks. It’s nice to have a GK like that if a game is going down to PK’s to decide the outcome.

  4. I have to admit that when I looked at the names on this list there were a couple WTF
moments, and even a name I had to look up. Than I remembered that this is a provisional 40 man roster where nearly half are going to be sent packing.
Even keeping this in mind I don’t understand a couple of the call-ups:
    1) Omar Gonzalez – has shown time and again he is not the answer. Would have preferred Alvarado who is just as accomplished in the club level and is 4 yrs younger.
    2) Christian Ramirez – has not been lighting it up in MLS, and has only seen mop-up minutes in friendlies for the USMNT. I don’t see what advantage there is to having him in camp.
    3) Tim Ream & Daniel Lovitz – I could see 1 of them in camp but not both. Honestly they are traffic cones who tend to have at least 1 gulp play per game.

I get including a number of the young guys inexperienced guys (Fossey, Gutman, & Lewis) just to have them around camp, see them up close to evaluate them with an eye towards the Olympic Qualification Tournament. But if they’re actually considered for the final 23 I’ll be shocked.

I guess we’ll finally see what Berhalters pecking order really is. If when he cuts the squad down to 23 he hasn’t included some of the fresh names (Holmes, Boyd) and or younger talent (Mihailovic, Sargent, Robinson, & CCV) I’m going to be very disappointed and we’ll likely be knocked out in the quarter finals.

  5. No love for Novakovich. He still hasn’t even been given much of a chance. He has started most of the year in the Eredivisie and someone like Lewis doesn’t even start in MLS. It is decisions like that which have me scratching my head. I’m not sure this team is better than LAFC. Only our midfield looks strong.

    • Nova can’t really play wing so if you look most of the other Forwards can play CF or both W and CF. You also have to weigh is it better for him to enter preseason rested and ready to take a spot at Reading or a new club or sit on the bench for Nats.

      • I thought the goal would be to have your best players in order to win the tournament, not worry about his preseason with Reading. As far as him sitting on the bench, we fans still don’t know at what level he can compete, but the Dutch league is almost certainly better than MLS or the minor CONCACAF teams.

  6. Important to note that on the Concacaf website, Tyler Adams is listed as a defender.
We know that his position is a midfield/defender hybrid.
I don’t suspect GB will deviate but important note if you are thinking about the fullback pool.

    Curious about Antonee Robinson’s role.
His skills align with a spot on the wing in the system.

Really dont want to see Ream as an LB.

Lovitz, eh. Please prove me wrong – hopefully he shows something worthy in camp aside from being someone who plays decent for his club at LB.

Anyone out there with a young son, please for the love of the USMNT, convince them that LB is the best position and it is their path to be a world class star!

    • The defender pool is not that impressive to me with both Yedlin and Brooks out. And Omar Gonzalez again? Pulleeeaase. How many chances is he going to get? Why him instead of Alvarado who also is a regular starter in Mexico? I fear this could be a leaky defense against the likes of CR and Mexico.

      • Your def right. Brooks is a major blow.
We better hope Long is healthy too. He limped off recently.

Silver lining is that this is a great opty for guys to step up. CCV and Miazga have a chance to take it up a level and compete. They are no longer youth players, have been playing first team club mins. Time is now for them.

I want us to win this thing no matter but big picture is that this tourney provides the best audition for the next cycle.

With our attacking guns, hopefully our best defense will be high press offense?

        The dream anyway.

PS hopefully CP is indeed featured in this tourney. Big part of me is skeptical of his plans.

  7. I liked Fossey last time I saw him with the youth teams so I guess with Yedlin out there was an open slot which I thought would have gone to Moore. Gutman is also a confusing choice. I like Gyua, maybe his speed brings something GGG is looking for. Amon not good enough for u20s but is for senior team is odd especially with Weah being with them.

    Reply
    • I wonder if some of the younger guys are being brought in prep for U23s and then will be released before the GC. I had also heard the Amon was not released for the U20s but I don’t know if that was fact or speculation.

  8. Can’t argue too much, everyone I had on my projected 23 are in there. I just don’t get why wooten isn’t in there, could argue he should be starting up top. Also would have liked to have weah and pomykal on that list, if they perform well at the u-20 WC I wouldn’t hate them in the gold cup roster. I’m just really hoping he chooses CCV or miles robinson over omar, as well as antonee robinson over lovitz. On the wings it’s a bit of a crap shoot but I guess I’d go with arriola, boyd, morris and baird, unless he sees holmes as a winger

    Reply
    • Agreed with most of it, but that Wooten omission is curious. He’s 29, and yes will be 32-33 at the next World Cup, but this is now. This is to win the Gold Cup. He’s the most successful U.S. forward as of NOW.

      • I don’t forget about Fabjo… “being looked at”, but just not quite good enough to make the cut amongst this stacked roster.

      • You have to wonder if he’s even interested I think he’s only been in to one or two camps.

      • Danny: you need to start looking at FJ as GGG’s Beasley. If there is an important match that we need to win he could get called. If it’s just a building game he’s going to see if others can do it. FJ is unlikely to be able to play world class LB at age 33 so Berthalter needs to find an option who could be so if the match doesn’t matter FJ shouldn’t be there.
