Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Green, Mendez, and more

Julian Green helped Greuther Furth to a point on Sunday, scoring his fourth league goal of the season in a 1-1 draw at Erzgebirge Aue.

Green’s tally came in the 15th minute via a header from a corner kick. Maximilian Sauer sent in a cross which Green struck into the high center of the goal. The hosts would equalize just four minutes later and earn a point in the match. The point helped Furth guarantee safety in the 2. Bundesliga for next season with one match remaining.

Green finished the match with a 90% passing completion rate, seven won duels, and one successful clearance. The 23-year-old will aim to sign off of the domestic campaign on a positive note against St. Pauli next weekend.

Elsewhere, Alex Mendez scored for Freiburg U-19’s while Sebastian Soto also found the back of the net. Andrija Novakovich returned to the starting lineup for Fortuna Sittard while Erik Palmer-Brown could not help NAC Breda from being relegated. 1. I’m surprised that we have yet to see Adams come back from injury. Compare him to Weston McKennie partial ligament tear over the national team break and he’s already been back going 90 for a few weeks. Adams kinda quickly and quietly left the break early after the first USMNT game and then I believe was unexpectedly sidelined the following week and hasn’t returned since.

  2. Tyler Boyd 5 goals 4 assists in 13 matches since a January loan from Portugal to Turkish Super Lig. Apparently has turned down being tied to NZ. A true winger seems like a stronger option on the wing than Lewis, Baird, Arriola, or Morris. Cyle Larin has just 1 goal in 11 Super Lig appearances after 43 MLS goals. He did represent NZ at U20 WC in 2013 so I think he’d have to file a switch so timing may not work for GC. Sorry I posted this earlier but I don’t see it so if this a duplicate I apologize.

    • Wow…low key ?!!!!. Thanks for putting a spotlight on this kid Johnnyrazor, Wow, I never really heard about him till now, and he is some how on NOBODY’S RADAR. What gives……at 24?????

With an American mother and a father from New Zealand……moved back to the US, spent the first decade of his life growing up in California before moving back to New Zealand.

A Left Winger that plays as a striker or right winger for Turkish Süper Lig side Ankaragücü on loan from Portuguese club Vitória de Guimarães ?

    • i, too, really hope we make a move for Boyd.
if all parties want it to happen, i think there’s enough time to get the paperwork sorted.
I looked up Jesse Gonzalez’s switch. He filed on 6/13/17 and got approved on 6/29/17.

    • Boyd is and has been on many people’s radar. Not sure if anyone from USSF has reached out to the kid, but he’s been discussed on boards like this for the past year.
Boyd may be an upgrade over what we’ve seen recently at winger (Baird, Lewis, Morris, Saief, Arriola); but is he really a long term upgrade at the position? Is he going to beat out Weah, Sabbi, Amon, Ledezma, Mendez, De La Fuente, etc… in 2 years time?

I’m all for making a run at him, but we have to be realistic about how he’s going to fit in.

      • He’s only 24 and has had more goal scoring success in better leagues than Weah,Sabbi, and Amon. The others you named haven’t even played a professional match. You can’t just count that the others will develop and pass on a guy who is doing well. I remember not that long ago when Gatt and Gyau were going to be the new Donovan and Beasley or Hyndman and Zelalem were going to replace Bradley and Jones. If a guy is eligible and can and wants to play he should play until someone better replaces him.
