Report: Toronto FC in talks to acquire Omar Gonzalez

Omar Gonzalez looks to reportedly be on his way back to Major League Soccer.

According to The Athletic, Toronto FC is in negotiations to sign Gonzalez from Liga MX side Pachuca. Due to TFC holding the No. 1 spot in MLS’ Allocation Process, the club would not need to make any trades in order to sign Gonzalez, according to the report.

The 30-year-old, currently with Atlas on loan from Pachuca, has made 23 appearances while scoring two goals. Gonzalez joined Pachuca from the Los Angeles Galaxy in 2016, after making 180 appearances for the Western Conference club.

Gonzalez was one of MLS’ top defenders while with the Galaxy, lifting three MLS Cups and two Supporters Shields. He also was voted into the MLS Best XI four times,

A winner of 49 caps with the U.S. Men’s National Team, Gonzalez was called into Gregg Berhalter’s March camp. Gonzalez started against Chile on March 26th, playing the full 90 minutes in a 1-1 draw in Houston.

Toronto FC are currently in fourth place in the Eastern Conference with 13 points earned through seven matches. Gonzalez’s arrival would give Greg Vanney another experienced option in defense to pair with the likes of Chris Mavinga and Laurent Ciman.

TFC next travels to Orlando City on Saturday afternoon.

    • Clearly you haven’t seen their current group of CBs. Gonzos one gaffe a game is far better than Mavinga and Cimans four or five. And I never thought Omar was that good.

  1. Going backwards. Pozuelo is pretty good but Boyd never overcame the knee, and now this. Even worse if they had to pay for the privilege. To be fair, TFC is back above the red line again, but this is not a “restore the dynasty” move. They have lost their knack. Also would be curious how they would do this while he is in contract, MX is in session, and we’re not in a transfer window. Maybe a loan or mutual tear-up. Or maybe this wouldn’t happen til June.

    • Moor is 35 and Ciman is 33 so it is getting younger. Mavinga and Ciman have been pretty poor and Moor has been injured for much of the last year and a half. Although not a splash it is an area of need and probably an upgrade. They are giving up 2 goals a game, are out of DP slots, and don’t have any ready CB prospects in their academy.

      • If he gets a DP deal, this is a team that spends money (or at least used to), open your checkbook and write some zeroes for anyone you want in the world. Omar himself is 30 and arguably on the downslope. Subbing in another old fart is not getting very far ahead on the curve or solving the issue for any length of time.

    • Dynasty? they were the team that couldn’t win..until they did, then went back to can’t win.

Definitely not a long term strategy, which is fine, but it seems like too much of their team is there. I don’t think they are good enough to win, so then they will be left picking up the pieces of a team that should have been rebuilt last year.

      • Sorry but for a 2 year period there, it was TFC and Seattle, then the rest of us. One of those years they won the title, the other they took second on PKs. They then went to the final of CCL (again a PK loss) before the wheels came off. In parity-MLS that is a dynasty. That team was built around Jozy/Gio/Bradley, quality stars. 2/3 of that foundation is still there. Knock “dynasty” all you want but you don’t just buy a MLS title, you have to align the right personnel. They were in the pocket for a couple years of high success but the GM work is now slipping. Or maybe the reality here was they were sick of losing, broke the bank to get playoffs and success, but now like NYRB no longer care to write as big of checks. In either case, it has slipped from where it was, both obviously in the table, but less obviously in terms of what the composition of the roster to pursue such status feels like.

    • They don’t have any DP slots so it would have to be paid with allocation money and I don’t know how much of that they have after Boyd and Ciman. If they are paying him DP money it’s bad but for six figures he’d make them a little better.
