Holmes withdraws from USMNT roster due to quad injury

Duane Holmes will play no part in the Concacaf Gold Cup.

U.S. Soccer announced on Saturday that Holmes has withdrawn from the Gold Cup squad due to a quad injury. Holmes came into camp nursing a quad strain which he suffered with Derby County to end the English season.

With Holmes out, Chicago Fire midfielder Djordje Mihailovic has been added to the 23-player roster. Mihailovic previously was one of Gregg Berhalter’s final cuts back on June 5th. He won his only three caps this calendar year, scoring against Panama back in January.

Holmes made his first appearances for the USMNT this month, being a substitute against both Jamaica and Venezuela. The 24-year-old was coming off a breakout season in England with Derby.

Berhalter and Co. kick off group stage play on June 18th against Guyana in Minneapolis.

    • How is Holmes being injured Berhalter’s fault? At this late stage, it is easier to pull in an MLS player than someone from Europe. In all likelyhood neither Holmes nor his replacement on the roster would have started or will start so this “announcement” is of little consequence.

  1. While I hought that Holmes had a couple good shifts for the USMNT, his presence or lack of it will not make much difference in the USMNT’s fortunes in the GC.

  2. For the first time in my life I am rooting against the US. The team has done nothing to earn my support. I actually want them to get slaughtered and make way for some real change along with some much needed humility. This team is an embarrassment.

      • Nah. What’s enbarrasing is someone like you rooting for a team that plays with no pride. I feel sorry for you. I’ve supported the US men’s team since 1989, the women’s team since ’91. The current iteration of the senior men’s team is vastly inferior to earlier generations and does not represent the country well. Luckily, the women’s team does.

      • For all you have watched this team, it’s sad you seem to have zero memory of the last two years. Remember how well the “fire everyone” mentality worked out for us. “Real change?” We replaced everyone in sight and ended up in a worse place (does anybody really think this is better than the Gulati/Klinsmann era?

And what exactly do you expect this time? A crack team of Kyle Martino, Elon Musk, and Ben Franklin to solve our problems? I guess your solution is to simply root for El Tri until better times. I’ll pass.

    • And hey I respect your fandom …. I’m an old timer myself at this point (Italia ‘90 for me) I just wanna see us go to a bad place. Look at the England fan base …. self-hating as it gets even when things are good. We at least need to get a solitary World Cup under our belts before we become that jaded.

    • Root for change of manager, gm, or president but these players didn’t pick themselves so don’t ever wish bad upon them. I agree that some of these players don’t belong but I will not hope for losses or bad things for this federation. These players and kids I’m sure put their heart on their sleeve out there every time but its not their fault if they aren’t good enough when they are put in a place to fail. I think GGG has been poor but I will watch and cheer them on every time.

  3. For the 1st time, I came str8 2 the comments, without reading the article 1st. (I did read the article, btw). Murphy’s Law is definitely in a effect! After the Jamaica match, and reading Omar Gonzalez was injured, and Aaron Long was injured. My question was, why is GB calling in SO MANY, injured players? This was b4, we found out T. Adams pulled out. What I think, about the roster is irrelevant, because the roster is set. Fact: We win the GC, we qualify for the Confederations Cup, we qualify for the CC, we get 2 field, 2 teams, (Germany & Mexico, 2017). I’m hoping 2c a younger squad, play together, in a major tourney, b4 2022. #KeepHopeAlive!

  4. this is where you get into the oddity of weah/Sargent/wood/green not even being (except sargent) on the provisional roster where they could even be considered. the selection and myopia are so bad we are almost showing up to Gold Cup with Camp Cupcake players, in whatever idiotic formation he comes up with. i think we can beat guyana but god knows beyond that. i don’t know if we escape group. it would be a miracle for us to make the final.

  5. Berhalter’s default setting is to look first to untried MLS players when we have better European options. Although they are not the same type of player as Holmes, either Morales or Green playing in Germany would be a better choice and should have been brought into camp to start with. Now of course they are probably on vacation leaving the US with guys who aren’t even distinguishing themselves in MLS.

    • If you weren’t on the 40 man who cares. eg Yeuill. That he called Mihailovic as the injury replacement speaks to this being His Guys and not like he has any objective sense of player value. This leaves like 2 total mids who might produce something on offense (Mckennie And Pulisic).

  6. What the……

    John Brooks ❌
    DeAndre Yedlin ❌
    Kenny Saief ❌
    Sebastian Lleget ❌
    Tyler Adams ❌
    NOW Duane Holmes ❌

We were beaten by a Jamaican team with USL players, got opened up Venezuela, and now our players dropping like flies with injuries……I mean, what else can go wrong before the start of the Gold Cup ? smh

  7. Holmes was one of the few midfielders with any bite, that made things difficult on the opponent. Mihailovich has been the antithesis of that. Very soft on the ball, easily dispossessed, heaps of cheap, silly giveaways. Kid has potential, but is not showing himself to be at all ready physically or with mindset for the international game.

  8. May I just point out that anyone who describes someone else as a “Beta male” anonymously on the internet can hardly be considered a “fair judge” of anything?

  9. I know this isn’t the case, but it’s almost as if USsoccer/MLS/SUM/Berhalter is purposely creating an incredible (MLS) underdog narrative for this Gold Cup team. Any result is a good result for Berhalter. Anything more validates his work as “successful.”

  10. Mihailovich really you could have brought in sargent and just use zardes as a midfielder. What a joke of a coach it’s clear we have a stubborn MLS biased coach and on top of that a Beta male who shows no emotion during game no emotion to motivate a player response.

    • The Beta thing is jacked up but the rest is right. When we suck I wanted chairs tossed or quiet changes made and he’s doing neither. I thought he should be canned after Venezuela and I never root against us, but if this goes badly he needs to be accountable in prompt fashion. Can we please not take a year to fire and a year to hire?
