Hope Solo: “Jill Ellis cracks under pressure”

Hope Solo doesn’t seem to have much faith in U.S. Women’s National Team head coach Jill Ellis.

Three days before the USWNT open up group stage play at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, Solo has hit out at Ellis saying “she cracks under pressure.” The 37-year-old made her comments on the BBC Football Daily Podcast, also indicating the USWNT would win matches whoever is in charge.

“Jill — she’s not the leader I wish her to be,” Solo said. “She relies heavily on her assistant coaches. She cracks under pressure quite a bit. But oftentimes it doesn’t matter, because the quality of the players on the U.S. team is superb.”

“We have a rich history of winning, a winning tradition, and it doesn’t matter oftentimes who’s coaching us, because we’ll find a way to win.. in spite of who the coach is.”

Solo won 202 caps in her USWNT and holds the team record for shutouts with 102. She won the 2015 World Cup and two Gold Medals (2008,2012) with the USWNT, but had her contract terminated following the 2016 Olympics.

The USWNT are favorites to win the competition in France and faces Thailand on Tuesday in its group stage opener.

  1. Not an Ellis fan, but is there anyone in the soccer world who doesn’t need to be given a platform more than our erstwhile goalie?

    Thanks, BBC.

  2. Whether she is right or wrong Hope is always throwing her opinion around as if it was iron clad. Completely arrogant. There is no perfect player or coach. Teams win games often pushed by an incredible player but make no mistake teams win and lose together. It’s easy to tear a home down but takes much more skill in building one. Click bait story and opinions are what most sites/so called news outlets now pass on as news.

  3. Solo won the WC in 2015, she did not win in 2007 and 2011, which were won by Germany and Japan, respectively…

  4. Im no Hope fan but I can totally believe what she is saying. He starting roster often gets us into trouble. We almost bombed last WC with her selections. The situation forced her to change, not anything she did. Now we start again. Im assuming she will start Horan, Morgan and Rapinoe. Im not sure they are the best choices and Rapinoe hasnt looked great lately.

Ellis needs to rotate her players in the group stage. Too many minutes too early will run them into the ground. I have no faith she will do this though.. she never has. If we get behind, we’ll see the Solo cracks appear

    • Maybe she has nothing to lose so she speaks the Truth? I have never been an Ellis fan but Hope is right. We can win with a crash dummy on the bench coaching. What we are no doing is building enough for the future. Its always the same players and many are getting too old and need to be replaced. For all her problems, I think Hope may still be better than the people we use now
